you said you doubt he'll ever be good, not that he won't be as good as Mahomes. how do you want to define good, this season and next?

I don't. I am clearly bull****ting. He didn't act like a petulant douche in his interview so now I'm fully on #TEAMMAYFIELD

But Mahomes is still gonna be better

And Cutlahhh sux donkeys.

Giving up on Sam so easily is like thinking Baker is GOAT. It's early in their first season. There are going to be a lot of ups and downs.

Elway, Aikman, and Peyton Manning had horrible rookie seasons and yet they are Hall of Famers. First year is all growing pains. Second year is where we see if they're legit.

At the time '98 Peyton was like the top tier of rookie QB seasons - save for Marino dominating. 3rd ITL in passing yards behind Favre/Young, rookie record for passing TDs only recently tied by Russ. 13th most yards per drive, 12th most points per drive in the NFL.

no, the colts went 3-13 that year, those were cumulative stats because his team was always behind (he lead the league in pass attempts that season). Peyton was actually kinda bad his rookie year.

If you actually look at his stats that year, he had a ridic high INT rate and a very low Y/A, ANY/A. On pro football reference you will see it's basically the same as his last season in the league Denver which were by far the worst two seasons of his career. The only two of which he had a lower than 60% comp, and he had 56.7 his rookie year. His comp % his rookie year is Mark Sanchez's career #'s. (all his numbers that season are right around there heh)

(we all laugh at smiff for checking down all the time in here, but his current Y/A, ANY/A are significantly higher than those)

Peyton was bad, RGIII was good yet we constantly anoint people rookie years as well that guy is good or bad, Goff was straight ass year 1, patience guys. Carr was anointed as a god around here year 1.

Darnold is only 21, to insist he will never be good is just plain stupid. Well outside of because he's on the Jets part. Yes, I also think Mayfield is better/will end up better but if you're surprised Darnold is struggling out of the gate, I'm not. Brees/Roeth didn't destroy that Browns defense either.

also the Jets gameplan vs the Browns last night, they acted as if their O line was made of swiss cheese or the Giants. (though I've heard texans are the worst, I haven't seen them this year yet).

Y/A: 18th
ANY/A: 21st

seems reasonable for a rookie QB in that era.

I don't have any recollection of the actual season, I was a kid watching Moss dunk on everybody but finding it doubtful that it was regarded as a poor rookie season.

https://www.pro-football-reference.c...et_yds_per_att

4th highest ANY/A (1920 - 2000) for a rookie QB. Min: 9 games, 155 YPG, age =<25, rookie season. Gives Peyton the ~3rd best rookie season to Greg Cook in '69 and Marino in '83. Or 4th/5th if you wanna argue for Bledsoe/Batch. Either way 'horrible rookie season' is a big stretch. My statement of top tier seems much more accurate.

One of the few games I'll watch this season, mainly because of Hard Knocks.

All true, but this forum wouldn't be much fun if we waited two years or more to pass judgement on players.

I'm old enough to remember when QBs almost always sat the first year. Maybe that's a big deal to learning the game that most of today's QBs don't get.

Even without Baker the Browns were one of the most entertaining teams in the league and they have a huge fanbase. Not surprised at all to see them draw well.

My GF wanted to watch because she watched hard knocks and "likes the browns" now. I imagine hard knocks made casuals interested in a TNF browns game. And the jets have a large fanbase.
