Also i feel like if healthy Tiger will remain in contention at somepoint on Sunday in at least 2 majors a year for the significant future, and he has to run into 2 or 3 chokers on Sunday in majors over the next 5 years

Vijay was 42 in 2004-05, but 47 is another matter entirely. Nicklaus's Masters win in 1986 was considered a miracle for an old guy. He was 46.

I think being 46 years of age as an athlete in 1986 is just a little different than 46 in 2021. Not really sure what kind of offseason training methods and sports medicine ol' Jackie had available to him back in the mid 80's, but it's irrefutably better now and it should continue to improve.

Tom Watson at age 60 missed an 8 foot putt to win the 2009 Open championship (eventually losing in a 4-way playoff).

If a 60 year old can nearly win a major in 2009, Tiger can definitely win a major in 2029.

The question wasn't whether he could win a title at an advanced age. It was whether he could be the best in the world at an advanced age.

Woods won his 14th major at age 32. Nicklaus won his 14th at age 35. But then Nicklaus won 1 at age 38, 2 at age 40, then 1 at age 46.

But Nicklaus's reign as the best golfer in the world pretty much ended at age 38. He was in the top 4 of the money list every year from age 22 to age 38 (which may be his most amazing stat. Tiger was close, doing it every year from age 21 until age 34 and 35, when he suffered the injuries and the break-up). But never again after that. His career at age 39 and up is very bare--3 majors, but only 2 other tournament wins.

Woods' knee aside, I wonder how the two would be side-by-side at age 38 in terms of health & fitness. You have to think Woods will maintain top physical shape for a longer period of time, if for nothing other than modern medicine and workout regimens.

At the same time, I would also expect the younger players will be better on average compared to several years ago.

You'd think so. But then again, 36 year old Woods was second in money and second in average last season. 37 year old Woods has already won twice this season.

Lol. From August 15, 1999 through October 30, 2010, Woods was the #1 ranked golfer except for a 2 month period in 2005.

He led the PGA in wins 11 times in a 13 year period. He didn't miss a cut from 1998 through 2004.

What more did he have to do to be "consistent"? You can argue that Nicklaus was more consistent. But first of all, that's only true for majors. Second, of all, even if you do accept it as true, being the second most consistent golfer of all time isn't bad.

Plus, there's criticism of Tiger being too focused on majors. But how can that be true of the guy who's almost guaranteed to beat Snead's record of most PGA tour wins? If anything, it's more true of Nicklaus than Woods. Nicklaus's best 10 year stretch of PGA victories was 44 wins from 1964-1973. Woods's is 58 wins from 1999-2008.

I wouldn't be shocked if Tiger wins a major in his early 50's. I just think him being the #1 ranked golfer at age 47 is nearly impossible. There is a big difference between winning a tournament occasionally and having the consistency in his late 40's to still be #1 ranked. Vijay is a freak. Tiger has been relatively fragile in comparison and his knees are very suspect by any standard.

Lol at Tiger being "fragile" compared to Vijay. Vijay Singh who hasn't won a tourney since he was 45 (2008) and has only finished in the top 10 in a major once since then.

Vijay started becoming good at age 35 and has been on the decline since age 45. Tiger became good at age 21 and is currently the #2 golfer in the world at age 37.

Stewart clownshoes Cink has made precisely 1 clutch putt in his ****ing life, and it was the birdie down the stretch that propelled him into that playoff. Still gets me furious.

the worst stretch of tiger is from 2010 to now, he still has won 5 out of 44 tournaments along with 3 top 5 major finishes. luke donald, the number 3 rank golfer in that stretch has 3 wins in 60 tournaments with also 3 top 5 major finishes. tiger is still far far ahead of everyone except rory magical season last season.

Just because Tiger grades himself by that criteria doesn't mean we should. 5 PGA wins in a calendar year is very good. People have led the PGA in wins with fewer than 5 wins.

Watson was 59 and it was not a 4-way playoff, only him and Cink.

However Turnberry was perhaps the only course on the planet that Watson could compete for a major on. Many things were working in his favor, very few golfers had ever played the course while he knew it like the back of his hand. It was not long, he didn't have the length to compete on a course of any length. It was firm and fast, you had to hit links shots, not many nowadays know how.

Plus Watson's swing and body are freakish, he is able to take it back as far today as he did in his heyday which is almost unheard of. An incredible combination of events had to occur for Watson to be in that position. And yes, it would have been the greatest sports happening ever had he won.

As far as Tiger goes, his body isn't going to hold up at that age. And his swing isn't built to function at that age. The older guys that can still compete have long, languid motions with little to no snapping. But perhaps most important, if he doesn't feel like he can be the best, he won't play. He'll just ride off into the sunset as one of the greatest ever.
