Or it could be the fact that he had to shoot super low today, so the margins were super thin?

2011 Masters was 7 under heading into the weekend and shot a 74 on Saturday taking him out of the running.
2012 Us Open was -1 and contending for the lead heading into the weekend and shot +8 on the weekend
2012 Open Championship shot 67-67 before fading away on the weekend with a 70-73
2012 PGA shot 69-71 and was up there for the lead before fading away on the weekend with a 74-72 finish
2013 Masters was -1 heading to weekend and didn't break 70
2013 Us Open was right there for the lead heading to weekend and shot 76-74
2013 Open was right there for the lead after 69-71 and faded away on the weekend shooting 72-74
2013 PGA shot 71-70 and was in contention and couldn't break 70 on the weekend in a birdiefest
2014 Open championship shot 69 first round before fading away with a 77-73-75

Those are actually his BEST results in the majors over that period the rest he either missed the cut, was injured or started just as bad as he finished. It would take a real mouthbreather Tiger fanboi to not see a trend there. Now we have him in contention 2 weeks in a row and unable to get over the hump both times again. It seems all too familiar.

There is a very clear difference in his performance pre and post fire-hydrant and it isn't all just health (although a lot of it is), it seems some of it is mental.
The boggle of stats NXT is going to post in response to this is going to hurt my brain and probably every one else's.

Also almost every post today was completely wrong. (sans the ones saying Tiger moves the needle like no one else, which obv correct)

It's another positive overall performance. He hit a bad bad shot off the tee on the par 5 but to get to contention a second weekend in a row is very positive indeed.

Problem with Tiger is two weeks in a row he needed to pull out driver on Sunday and hit a good drive and he just couldn't.

At Valspar on 18, needing a birdie to force a playoff, he opted to go iron off tee, leaving himself with a 180+ yard approach shot (which he left way short giving hiim an impossible birdie putt). He has no confidence in his ability to go driver+wedge, which obv gives him a way better chance at making birdie (even if it increases variance).

Its just going to be very tough for him to win one of these tournaments if he cant stripe a driver down the fairway on an important hole on Sunday.

He needs a psychiatrist more than anything else, though im sure he has one.

5 full field events in we have:

T23, Cut, 12, T2, 5

~1.8 SG/rd for the year, 7th on tour. 2.5 SG/rd in his last 3 events would be good for 1st on Tour.

Has beat the field average scoring in 16 of his 18 rounds played including 12 straight rounds.

Notable players current streak of beating the field average:
DJ : 4 straight rounds, before that 2
Spieth: 1, before that 11
Rory: 4 this week, before this he had 4 straight below the field average
JT: 3, before that 9
Rose: 4, just this week

There are actually three courses where he's won 8 times each. Bay Hill, where he won the Arnold Palmer/Bay Hill Invitational 8 times. Firestone, where he's won the Bridgestone/NEC 8 times. And Torrey Pines, where he won the Buick Invitational/Farmers Insurance Open 7 times and US Open once.

See here is the thing. No one is saying he isn't playing well. Posting some stats saying that he is playing well (NXT) is pointless because I would assume we all agree on that.

What I think we disagree on is whether or not Tiger's mental game is worse now than it was 10 years ago. I think it is obvious that it is. When you look at the high pressure spots he has been in since the hydrant and also this season it is obvious he is choking to some extent. 1997-2008 Tiger was quite the opposite.

I know, I know he won 5 times in 2013! (all on his pet tracks) and was #1 in the world! So that counters any argument you could put out there. But the facts show he hasn't played well in a major on the weekend since the YE Yang meltdown/fire hydrant and this season with a couple real chances to win has essentially choked. If it was Rory hitting it OB on 16 that is what all you guys would be saying so why when Tiger does it is it not choking even though he has a history of things that show mental problems like when he couldn't chip and basically all his recent results.

I am glad he is back. I hope we see a return to true Tiger form it would be amazing. I also can actually look at reality and see that there is a mental issue there. It doesn't mean he can't overcome it. But he hasn't yet.

Obviously, he's sucked since the end of 2013, but his 2008-2013 run (18 wins, 1 major, 3 POY) would have been considered elite if anyone else did it.

To put that in perspective, only 1 active player in the PGA has at least 18 wins in their career--Phil Mickelson. That 6 year run where most consider him past his prime is a better career than the current #1 in the world.

Right no one is debating that he was mega-elite and has elite results. I am saying since the hydrant so November 2009 he has not showed up in the big spots (majors) like he did before that. He has faded on the weekend every major he has been in contention since then without exception. Do you think that is just coincidence or a valid trend? Do you think it is a coincidence he forgot how to chip a few years back?

He went from the most mentally tough choke proof athlete in history to a guy who has made a habit of it in big spots for the last 9 years. Do you really think 2013 Tiger was nervous playing Bay Hill or Firestone or whatever? That is why his results there were good but when it really mattered and was playing the tournaments he has always graded himself on which are the majors he did not perform well. Now I would say winning these tournaments like Bay Hill and the Valspar does matter very much to him and he has not performed well down the stretch in either of the two real chances he has had. Is that coincidence or more of the same?

There really is no way to know right now but time will tell.

Golf is also a high variance sport. Does anyone think Rory is now back after a 2yr hiatus? Or do people realize how insanely hot he ran with the putter yesterday?

The mental stuff with Tiger is interesting. He is clearly different recently. Smiling and joking with players. Chatting it up with Burns DURING the round. Throwing balls at Reed on the range. Age does humble us all.
