He said after the round today that he is playing The Open at St. Andrews - calling it his favorite course in the world.
I think he also said that going forward he'll never play a full schedule again, but plans to play the majors, and hadn't decided what other tourneys.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I'm guessing he'll want to play at least one competitive round prior each major. Maybe not the one the week before, but the one two weeks ahead, to give his body time to rest. Possibly also throw in one or two others when he's feeling up to it, and I'd guess we'll see him tee it up maybe 8-10 times a year.

Surprised if he doesn't play the PGA. Weather seems more promising there. Plenty of recovery time. Kind of strange to pronounce St. Andrews his fave course while on the grounds of Augusta National. I'm on him winning again. A major? I wouldn't bet against it. Gun to my head. Hmm. I've already won the "He wins another major bet." Gun to my head I'd have to take no, but wouldn't want to. But 83 is in the cards.

I won't be playing a full schedule ever again. And so, it'll be just the big events. I don't know if I'll be able to play Southern Hills or not. But I am looking forward to St. Andrews, and so, that is something that is near and dear to my heart - I've won 2 Opens there, it's the home of golf. It's my favorite golf course in the world, so I will be there for that one. But anything in between that, I don't know. I will try... (garbled) ...like this week I will try and get ready for Southern Hills, and we'll see what this body is able to do".

My opinion is that he feels that he is able to compete at Augusta and St Andrews when he's not at his best. He wants to make sure his game continues to improve before he commits to the other majors.

Honestly I'd love to see Tiger in the booth. I get that he wants to make another run at a major, but I hope he doesn't join the senior tour after he's 50. His body has been through enough. And he's been great every time he's done commentary on TV.

Good interview. No problem at all with the way he brought up St. Andrews. Sounds like, "I will try and there's no doubt." He never played a full schedule did he? But of course it's going to be cut way further now.

He won't go the Nick Faldo route, but we'll probably see him doing some occasional guest appearances in the booth a la Jack. And no way to senior tour.

I could see Tiger playing a U.S. Senior Open or other major, but it would require the right set of circumstances. Maybe also a special event like the Furyk and Friends if he's tight with the host. He's definitely not going to be playing the Principal Charity Classic or the Dick's Sporting Goods Open. His days of playing regularly are over on any tour.

Tiger is going to be 47 this Dec. He's not getting any younger and there has been so much wear on his body that he'll be a very old 47 physically.

Denial
Anger
Bargaining <- Tiger is here (and a lot of his fans)
Depression
Acceptance

There is no miracle surgery or special therapy that is going to restore his leg to the way it was. I wouldn't put it past him to challenge in some tournament but I really don't think we'll see another major. He's handicapped himself so much in relation to the field that winning depends on everyone else playing below average.

He needs to get to the point where he moves on from high-level golf and finds some other meaning in his life. That's probably going to take at least another couple years. I wish him luck.

"some other meaning in his life" - like when he caddies for Charlie?

Lol, he just made the cut at the masters and beat a bunch of players in their prime. Speith, Koepka, Berger, Ancer, Scott, Burns, Schauffele, Dechambeau, Rose after 500 days off. Fans and players love it, he obviously enjoys it. Absolutely zero reason for him not continue to play.
Plus his ball speed is right up there with the top guys and will only improve.

Yeah Tiger loves the competition and the comaraderie with the other players. I can see him continuing to play majors for a couple more years, and maybe a few other of his favorite tournaments here and there.

But I don't think his leg or body is gonna get much better. His body has been through the wringer and he has nothing left to prove in golf. He's getting old and the body doesn't bounce back like it once did. The competition is better than it's ever been.

I can't see him ever winning again. That's based mainly on how he was walking around the course. He looked old and injured. He's probably 70% of his former level if that, and I don't think that's good enough to win these days.

Not taking anything away from his accomplishment this weekend. Being 4 shots out of second after round 2 was an incredible performance. But winning is a stretch. This injury is far worse than any of his previous ones, and he's pushing 50.

Cool? His ball speed was still 175ish, which puts him above average.

yeah i think revots nailed a bunch of what i would say (and said yday in the Masters thread). that video of him all hunched over limping into his mother's arms after signing his scorecard Sunday is the indelible Tiger image from this tournament for me.

he's a broken man and i believe he knows this. sure, he's going to give it a go at the Open and next year's Masters... try to catch lightning in a bottle, but it ain't happenin. making a cut at the Masters is nice, but it's not exactly the toughest cut to make now is it. they run out all the Couples and Mizes and those ppl drawing dead auto make up half the ppl missing a cut. that's not the way it works at the Open and US Open.

i think deep down what really must concern Tiger is his grade F putting. crouching down a bit at the knees doesn't cut it. anybody that plays golf will tell you your putting will suffer if you can't get down lower to read the greens properly.

i'd like to see him embrace becoming the RC messiah for the US side and continue to groom Charlie to be the next big thing.

That's a helluva burden to put on a kid. I understand the sentiment, but give the kid a chance to find his own way in life.

But, as I alluded upthread, I'm afraid there is too much Earl in Tiger.

caveat that Charlie wants to be the next big thing obv, but all indications point to it. kid seems to love living on a golf course. hell, he's probably already playing money games with JT and the boys.

yeah this is the new trend and why we're seeing more father son combos in the professional leagues than ever

a very small portion of it is hitting the genetic lottery, there's plenty of people with woodsian genetic makeup that never heard of golf because they were born to peasant farmers in indonesia

when former professional athletes have the resources to give their children (who most likely share a lot of the same genetics which made their parents so great) the best training at an early age the sky is the limit

we've seen this for a while in the NHL and it's finally beginning to become a thing in other sprots like MLB, i can't imagine golf, which like hockey is more gated than most sports, won't be the same, we're going to see a lot of players in the next decade with very familiar surnames going forward

It doesn't really matter what you think. He wouldn't commit to The Open if he didn't think his body and game were going to continue to improve. Tiger is probably the most driven athlete ever, you don't become that dominant in an individual sport without being insanely driven. He's had plenty of reasons to quit before, he wouldn't put on all this effort to compete if he didn't have a goal of improving and winning again. He could have mailed it in and been Earl to Charlie multiple surgeries or accidents ago. But someone who becomes the most dominant athlete ever doesn't think that way. 3 weeks ago he didn't think he was going to play, to think his health and game aren't going to continue to improve as he puts the work in is just silly.
