Tiger's nowhere near his prime when he sunk 100 foot putts with regularity, never hit an errant drive, and won 25 tournaments a year. He should just retire.

Lol at the major sample from 2010 onward, you guys should go check out Phil from when he turned pro through 2003, then come back and I'll tell you he has won 5 majors.

Thayer,

It doesn’t assume that at all. Does mental ability/toughness exist? If yes obviously there are degrees.

If you think a guy who has come back from the hiatus he has been on, played the way he has while dealing with the weight of expectations from the outside world, while having millions of eyes on every shot expecting greatness from each stroke is mentally weak then I hope you have the common sense department on speed dial.

Clark is a hater he simply tries to be coy about it and isn't all in your face like some of these other jacks.

lol at thinking its mental when there is no evidence to support him making mental errors rather than simply mi****ting shots. A much more likely explanation for fading on the weekends is that its physical since he has been injured and its a lot harder on the body to be playing for the 4th, 5th, or 6th consecutive day than it is to play on the 2nd or 3rd consecutive day.

Lol I’m a hater. That’s rich. He’s one of my oh, easily 10 maybe 5 favorite athletes of all time. Y’all a little snowflakey for people suggesting, with fair reason, he doesn’t close out majors like he used to and he’s so far had uncharacteristically poor moments when close on the weekends even in these tune-ups.

Even if you disagree, surely one can acknowledge that his weekend performances in majors has been subpar even if one wants to cling to the idea that he’s not lost any mental edge.

I can understand those who want to say everything is variance. Ok, cool, he got a lot of favorable variance early in his career and he’s had a lot of bad variance since 2009. I disagree but I can see how someone would think that.

CDL, I think the definition of mentally strong is precisely about his ability to hit shots under pressure. Not about his strategy.

Ya I am not a hater in the least. I want the guy to do well. I was and to some extent still am a huge Tiger fan. Certainly my favorite memories watching golf center around Tiger. I also am not so far gone on the Tiger KoolAid to recognize reality. That's what those of you who think HEEEEE'S BACK everytime he gets a T12 at the Valspar don't get. You are so untethered from reality that you don't see the reality of Tiger Woods now or for the last 9 years. Could he become great again? Sure he could. But he has an almost decade long track record of blowing it everytime he gets close to achieving something he actually cares about. That is indisputable.

The goalposts haven't shifted. Let's see him win a tournament, any tournament. Let's see him not play himself out of a chance at a win on a Sunday. Then we can get to the can he win a major.

I guess I fail to see what he has really accomplished that we need to shift the goalposts to make our point. Give me an example of him pulling through in the clutch this year or any year in a major since 2008. Give me an example of him not ****ting himself on a Sunday in any event this year.

I mean he can chip now. Good for him. You really got me there.

He has no confidence in his ability to go driver+wedge, which obv gives him a way better chance at making birdie (even if it increases variance).

Its just going to be very tough for him to win one of these tournaments if he cant stripe a driver down the fairway on an important hole on Sunday.

He needs a psychiatrist more than anything else, though im sure he has one.
What about the putt on 17? Hands were shaking from shookness just hard enough to luckbox it to the right line?

what constitutes pressure? If every tournament counts as a high pressure situation then do you guys have shot-tracker for his practice rounds and rounds at home to show he's not missing shots then? If its only talking the back 9 on Sunday then sometimes he is having to take a little more risk, but he also hit a tee shot OB on Thursday morning this week so its not even like he is only missing shots on the weekend.

If you want to talk about his prime I think the US Open in 2000 would be a good example of that. He made a triple in the third round there. Was that a sign that he was mentally weak? I also seem to remember that he shot 40 on the front at Augusta on Thursday in 1997. Was he mentally stronger back then?

Rickie and Day both went in the water over the weekend. Confirmed can't handle the pressure.

DJ was tied with Ted ****ing Potter going into Sunday at Pebble and lost by 3 strokes! Confirmed can't handle the pressure.

Its almost like people perceive a good round on Thursday and a bad one on Sunday as coming from someone who can't handle the pressure, but if you flipped the results exactly its all mental toughness and not simply a deviation on how well they are playing that can be expected based on their skill and normal volatility.
