The real issue is just how deep his personal and chemical problems are. Do I think he has an issue with painkillers? Yes. And none of us know how much pain he has dealt with throughout his career. Remember, he has been under the knife repeatedly since a teenager. And he has an extremely addictive personality.
I think it showed that he is in extreme pain and needs painkillers to manage it. Like every other human being. He is tough, but 24 hours of mind-numbing pain where he can't go even sit for a press conference takes its toll. We use to numb it with alcohol but many of us just moved to opioids. Higher rate of addiction, but meds do work. I doubt Tiger would have even be able his house without them. Steve Kerr can't even sit on bench for finals for a few hours.
I relied on initial media reports that he was swerving, smelled like alcohol, acted arrogant, and refused a breathalyzer test. I was 100% wrong.
Yes, he shouldn't have been driving and obviously could have hurt someone (and himself). All I really saw though was a person in serious pain and agony who didn't know the meds (brutally tough for anyone to know compared to alcohol) and had absolutely no intention of hurting anyone. He was unbelievably polite compared to many drivers I imagine. He didn't ask them to give him a pass. Amazing.
I was hoping this was the bottom and he would use it rebound. I think the place he is in though will be marked by severe physical pain for an extended period and he will just have to emotionally adapt as well to his body not being able to do what it once did.
Sadness. He looked so immortal when he was young that it hard to seem him all of a sudden so "old". Nobody gets out alive still rings true.
