Yes, his performance in majors of T4, T4 and T23 is far from embarrassing. Yes, he's still likely recovering somewhat from his injuries of the past few years. Yes, he's distracted by the scrutiny related to his philandering. He's Tiger Woods - lots of reasons to think that in a year from now we'll have forgotten about his 2010 performances on the course.

But he's 34 and one major away from being 35. He needs 5 more professional majors to pass Jack. 5 Majors from age 35 on is far from a lock the way he looks right now. I'm too lazy to look it up, but 5 majors won at 35 or older has got to be something only Jack accomplished (he won 6). I'm sure BO can come here and tell me I'm not a true fan for not knowing that one off the top of my head - maybe someone else won 5 from that age, I don't know.

He just shot 2 over par 74 at Firestone, a course he loves. Looks like he may not qualify for the Ryder Cup (!) and seems almost certain to lose the world #1 spot to Phil in the next few weeks. No swing coach in place. Personal life still in flux. Doesn't look good.

For the first time in a long time I think it really is fair to ask "does he get there".

If he doesn't, the whole GOAT discussion will get a lot more interesting.

I think he's going to get to 20. With the advances in medicine and fitness, he'll be playing well late into his 40s imo. Just look at a guy like Vijay who had 22 tour wins after the age of 40.

He will find his groove in a year or two and will start winning majors again. It's not like he hasn't been competitive in the majors this year. There is a lot of work that can be done on a swing during the offseason, and with a full offseason that he can devote to golf I think he'll show rapid improvement going into next year.

I would have thought the same 2 years ago, but given a number of injuries the last couple years, and his dramatic fall from grace, I don't think the above is at all certain. No longer being on the pedestal and knowing your legacy is forever tarnished might become a grind, especially when the body hurts and when a bunch of young golfers start really hitting their prime.

Wow, I voted and didn't expect to see that many for 20+. I believe he comes back strong sooner rather than later. Tiger can just put together some ridiculously runs and I am not ready to count him out from doing that again yet.

I think he's going to thrive off of this. Not that it will stop him from getting older and declining obviously.

The combined factors of his personal life distractions and the building pressure that comes with each tournament he doesn't win are a lot to handle.

People are already talking about him like he's dead. Tiger will be allright.

Thread is kinda overly dramatic. Not saying it's not worthy of discussion but people are freaking out over today with standard recency bias, just like how they were proclaiming he was going to run away with St. Andrews halfway through the first round.

Now some are suggesting the US team be better without him on the Ryder Cup. Are these people ****ing high?

Until he's won 19 he hasn't won 19 and there's always a chance he pulls a Watson or a Baker-Finch and just stops being able to play but that's severely unlikely. I've actively rooted against him for over a decade but he's supremely talented and this slump just gives people something to talk about.

I'll stop short of saying he's the favorite at Whistling Straits though. That course is not as receptive as Medinah to drives 200 yards offline.

Also, he shot +4 today, not +2. Firestone is a boring-ass course and among its other faults is that there are only two par-5s (along with 12 mind-numbingly boring par-4s and four utterly forgettable par-3s). Thus it's a par 70.

Heh, I still remember people talking about how he might not win another major back in 03-04 after he went ten straight majors without winning.

Then he won four of the next eight and finished 4th or better in seven of them. Granted, I don't expect him to do the same thing this time around, but kinda funny.

As unbelievable as he's been, he's still "only" averaged 1 major win a year, and for most of that period he was a dominant force.

Dunno, 2 years ago I make him like 85+% to pass Jack. Now? Maybe a slight dog but close to a coinflip. That's a huge change.

I have wondered that. That has to alter your shot and rhythm right? I have no idea...but my dad said that to me a couple years ago that his arms were getting so much larger after his knee injury and he wondered if that changed his style up at all.

Well, he's probably been masturbating like crazy recently, so it's not surprising.

The main worry for him has to be his putting. Its been pretty shocking so far and that was always his strongest point. I think he missed 3 par putts from within 4-5 feet which for Tiger is unheard of

His driving has been awful for a few years now so cant put that down to the break but I expect his iron play to improve alot in the coming months.

That shot where he overshot the green onto a TV Tower yday was horrific.

Hmm. I think if this were it, he'd have one arm that looked like Popeye and the other arm like Olive Oyl.

if he had a clue as to how to putt this year he could have easily won a major.

if he can straighten that out (and i have no reason to believe he can't) then i'd say he has another 3-4 majors in him.

so i vote "tie Jack"

Right, much like how now people are wondering whether he'll ever win again or whatever - never mind the fact that his performance so far this year is probably well above tour average or that recent major winners include Michael Campbell and Rich Beem - after his hot run of a few years ago people were like zomg he's going to win 30++++!!!!!!!111 What? No.

I'm guessing 20-21 but really it could be anywhere from 15-24. It's not just him, the competition has a say in it too. After all, Ernie Els may have won three majors in 2000 if only Tiger or Vijay didn't play.
