So in this SB, assuming the Pats kicked the XP - the Falcons would have one chance to win the game with a TD+2. Anything less or a loss of possession is a loss. How exciting would that be? If the Pats have the balls to go for TD+2 they win outright. But if they miss that exposes them to losing to a TD+1, so I doubt they would.

I've had this idea since before the new OT rules, and posted it here several times. Someone needs to get me in touch with Goodell or one of the owners. I know I could sell them.

I believe it's still advantageous to receive in this scenario - but seems like not much more than a coinflip.
Fine idea ofc but it really is sad that we even have to waste time talking about this. I mean I'm not even 40 yet but I'm legit worried that I'm gonna die before NFL OT becomes non-******ed. It just doesn't make sense that this nut should be so hard to crack. God humans are dumb.

first team to 6 pts, both teams guarenteed a possesion in playoffs. No OT in regular season

so easy

The red and the blue seem mutually exclusive...

Am I dreaming or didn't an NFL coach choose to kick off in OT to "take the wind" somewhat recently? I want to say it was actually BB but it sounds more like a Tomlin thing...

And iirc they lost first drive

Belichick's done it a few times. Did it in 13 to beat the Broncos in OT and did it in 15 against the Jets where the Pats lost (Jets scored a TD right away to Decker IIRC)

Pretty sure in '13 it was because it was super windy. Don't remember how much of a factor it was in the Meadowlands in '15, but Edelman and Lewis were both out, LaAdrian Waddle was starting at tackle and the offense was a tire fire at that point.

He said the defense was playing better than the offense, there was no excuse, just a stupid decision

It gets overlooked because the Pats have been so successful, but Belichek is almost as bad at game management as the rest of the coaches in the league. His teams are just usually good enough that it doesn't matter.

Didn't they massively **** up vs the Jets? Wasn't that when Slater said "we wanna kick that way" and the ref took that as "we wanna kick" and let the Jets pick the direction they wanted?

Vikes did this and won in super windy game vs Rams '15 where Teddy was concussed and Shaun Hill was completely worthless.

BEFORE the rule change tho the Lions (?) elected to kickoff / take the wind or w/e and lost.

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree here. Has he made some mistakes, sure. But as bad as some others? That's just crazy talk.

He makes some minor mistakes and the occasional head scratcher gets over looked cause he's BB, but if you think other NFL coaches are on his level of game management I suggest watching the NFL sometime.

Not match, beat. That way the game is extended even less and it's more exciting.

Correct, but an actual coin flip is the absolute least satisfying result for the fans.

I actually think we've gone from too many coaches with tight butthole to too many coaches with swanging dick. Gotta find the balance.

should have added a 'but'.

so first to 6 pts, but both teams are guaranteed a possession. so if team A goes down and gets a TD, team B has a chance to equal or better. (in which case next score wins, so we'd probably see team B go for 2 a lot)

don't love it, if team A goes down and scores 8 pts I don't think it should be game over

B would not go for two a lot. It would be rare as the correct move would obv be to kick the PAT, BOOST MORALE and EXTEND THE GAME
