Think the refs blew the call on McClellin's extra point block. But I'll let it go.

Any chance this game will at least get the OT rule changed so both teams have a fair chance to score? I heard one or people talking about it on the radio, but not sure the traction it has when the committee meets. Atlanta not getting a chance to answer gave the game a bad ending and really highlighted the unfairness of the rule.

The rule was already changed to give teams a chance to answer a field goal.
Don't see how it's unfair that you lose if you give up a TD on any possession of OT.

I think the NFL should change the OT rules but I never once thought it wasn't fair or gave the game a bad ending. Maybe because I doubt the falcons would have done anything with their possession.

Watching the replay of the Hightower sack, man did the ATL RB fvck up and not even get in his way.

I think, given that drives in the NFL result in a touchdown way below 50% of the time, there can be no discussion of unfairness. Drives typically result in a score (TD/FG) ~40-45% of the time, so again, I don't think there's any issues of fairness in general.

regular season: end games as a tie if the score is tied after 4 quarters. forget overtime, it's not needed and really just produces variance.

playoffs: play a 5th quarter with regular rules (just like the NBA does it). if score is still tied after 5, then you can move on to playing with wonky rules.

Refs missed some calls but certainly weren't biased in favour of Pats. They blew the illegal formation call against the Pats on the blocked PAT and made a pretty soft DPI against Butler in the 3rd.

The facemask on Sanu was the worst no call both in terms of how blatant it was and impact it had on the game. The other bad no call was Edelman getting hit late out of bounds on the opening drive which gets called almost all the time.

The three holds on Atlanta to prolong that Pats' drive were fine.

I don't see what the %s have to do with it - one team was successful given the odds - why not give the other team the same chance?

Because no team would ever receive in overtime and it give a large benefit to whoever won the toss.

The argument is that it's unfair and that a coin toss effectively seals the win for the winner of it.
That doesn't seem like sound logic to me at all. It's a two way game.

OT kinda fits the superbowl, it's cut throat (first team to score). Maybe they could change to TD's only just to make it more fun.

the only perfect solutions for OT are the ones that don't change the rules specifically for the sake OT. IE, how college basketball and NBA do it. that is perfect. it's the same game, just with an extra period!

college football creates a completely different rule set for OT which might be exciting but is pretty dumb. you remove punting, punt returning, kicking off, and kick returns. teams that are better / put more emphasis on special teams get screwed. plus the entire idea of matching scores doesn't exist in regulation, it only exists in OT. if it's a completely different game than the 60 minutes that just preceded it, that's flawed.

The OT rules are written as if every team should have an offense and defense of equal caliber. But a team like ATL is only in the SB in the first place because of there #1 offense and despite their #24 defense. So how is an OT scenario where they don't even get to use their biggest asset close to fair? So their fate is highly correlated to the coin toss.

just add an extra quarter and forget the screwy special rules.

obviously I've been saying this. for legit reasons, I don't think the league is keen to extend (by a lot) your average regular season game. and besides a weird American complex about ties...there is nothing wrong with it. in fact you already have ties and the earth keeps spinning!

but for the playoffs, playing an extra quarter is the most fair outcome. the games are too important for a wacky "OT only rule" to have a huge influence on outcome, and obviously you can't have a tie. plus the losing team doesn't get to play the next week so injury / fatigue concerns are decreased so that factor is only half as relevant as it is in the regular season.
