STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS PEEHS STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS PEEHS

12-26-2012 , 06:28 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm running a PEEHS with questions about the Stanley Cup Playoffs. There are 16 questions below. If you want to enter, please PM me a non-numbered list with your answers.
For those new, the object of a PEEHS is to end up with the lowest score, by providing correct answers that no one else will guess.

*** NO RESEARCH ALLOWED ***
*** WILL BE SCORED BY THE FLEEBROG METHOD ***

Also, please be as specific as possible with your answers to avoid confusion. (i.e. if a question asks for a person, please answer with the first and last name).

Entries close on Monday at 11:59 PM Eastern time. The reveal will be New Year's Day (time TBA).

Good luck to everyone that enters! Away we go.....

#1 - Since 1950, there have been 12 different players who scored a goal in overtime to win a Stanley Cup. Name one.

#2 - Since (and including) the 2000 playoffs, there have been 16 different players that have scored a goal in triple overtime (or later). Name one.

#3 - Patrick Roy lost a Game 7 in his career 7 different times. Name a team that beat Patrick Roy in a Game 7 (I need the team name and the year).

#4 - The NHL changed the playoff format for the 1994 playoffs, changing the division semi-finals to the conference quarter-finals and seeding the teams in each conference 1 through 8. Since (and including) 1994, 9 different teams seeded 5 through 8 have advanced to the finals. Name one (again I need the team name and the year).

#5 - Since 1970, 11 different goaltenders have won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs. Name one.

#6 - Since 1980, 10 different head coaches have won the Stanley Cup and lost in the Finals. Name one.

#7 - There are 13 different players with at least 180 career playoff points. Name one.

#8 - The NHL introduced the President's Trophy for the 1985-86 season, awarding it annually to the team with the highest regular season point total. There have been 10 different winners that advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals (7 winners and 3 losers). Name a team that won the President's Trophy and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in the same year (again I need the team name and the year).

#9 - The 2003 playoffs were notoriously low-scoring, so much so that the two players that led the scoring race did so with 18 points. This was the lowest total to lead the playoffs since Boston's Phil Esposito led the 1969 playoffs with 18. Name someone that finished in the Top 10 in scoring for the 2003 playoffs. (Note - there was a 7-way tie for 10th, so there are 16 possible correct answers for this question).

#10 - In 2004, Calgary's Martin Gelinas made history by scoring two series-clinching goals in overtime (at Vancouver and vs. Detroit). This feat was matched in 2012 by New Jersey's Adam Henrique (at Florida and vs. NY Rangers). Gelinas scored 8 goals in the 2004 postseason, and Henrique scored 5 in the '12 playoffs. Name one of the 13 players that had at least one assist on a Martin Gelinas goal in 2004 or an Adam Henrique goal in 2012.

#11 - For the 1980 playoffs, the NHL had an expansion/format change. The four division winners were guaranteed spots, but the rest of the qualifiers were seeded on regular season points regardless of conference (this is how the 1980 Finals ended up being Flyers-Islanders). This format was held for 1981, but was changed for the 1982 playoffs. Name a first-round matchup from either the 1980 or 1981 playoffs (I need the two teams involved but do not need the year). (Note - there was one repeat matchup in 1980 and 1981, so there are 15 possible correct answers for this question).

#12 - Since (and including) 1992, there have been 10 different players to record at least 30 points in a single postseason. Name one.

#13 - Joe Sakic holds the record for overtime goals in a career with 8. Name a goaltender that has given up one of these goals. (Note - one goaltender has given up two of Sakic's goals, so there are only 7 possible correct answers for this question).

#14 - Since 1960, there have been 11 different players to score a game-winning goal in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Name one.

#15 - The Whalers/Hurricanes franchise only won one playoff series while based in Hartford. In 1986, the Whalers defeated Quebec 3-0 in a best-of-5 Adams Division semi-final. A total of 11 different Whalers scored at least one goal in that series. Name one.

#16 - Since 1993, a total of 12 different non-Canadian players have finished first (or tied for first) in the playoff scoring race. Name one. (Note - if a player was born in Canada but has represented a different country internationally, that player is non-Canadian for this quiz).

Again, good luck to all! Please PM me or ask me a question in this thread if you need something clarified.

how do you enforce the "no research allowed" rule?

Really good set of questions. I used to read a lot of hockey trivia books when I was like 8 years old, and this set of questions is a lot like that (whereas most games here have more stats based questions.)

I will submit in a day or two.

You log into a server, and it tracks whether you use outside assistance. I mean wtf? It's not like money's involved, just don't research anything.

As Murs said, this is just for fun and regrettably there are no cash prizes for the podium finishers. All entrants are to abide by the honour system, but if you feel the need to research anything, I think Al Bundy said it best...

Spoiler:
IT'S ONLY CHEATING IF YOU GET CAUGHT.

Fantastic set of questions.

To clarify for the GWG game 7 SCF question, the GWG could've been scored to make the game 3-0 or something at the time, correct?

These questions are tough. I am scared to join.

Thanks Geddy. And you are right - for example, if a game 7 ended 8-4, then whoever scored the winning team's 5th goal scored the game winner.

In it to win it.

Spent almost a good hour mulling over #15 and all I could muster up was an educated guess. Great question.

In, hoping to not finish last.
