Drive 30 minutes from taxpayer funded Lucas Oil Stadium (Total cost ~$700 million) and there is a brand new $600 million Center for the Performing Arts, built with taxpayer money.

They have $100 seats available to see Chinese Acrobats or Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Unlike Lucas Oil Stadium, they don't have a full house for every performance.

Link that puts pricetag of Center for the Performing Arts at $600m?
~$150m of that was taxpayer funded.

$600 million includes the entire complex, not just the Palladium, and about 1/3rd is taxpayer funded.

The point still stands that it s a massive government funded project that charges high ticket prices to citizens.

Is ~$600 million in tax money for a 70,000 seat stadium really that different than ~$150 for a 1600 seat concert hall?

Sigh, yes it was. Hagler was my favorite athlete of all time by such a gap I couldn't tell you who second is. Oh, I'd repressed so much from that night. I could tl;dr the mother of all tl;dr's, but I won't.

I've never truly recovered. I wandered out of the Salt Palace closed circuit broadcast in total (drunken) shock, so shocked I couldn't reach oblivion back home, tho I tried.

I'd forgotten Ray had originally planned to go toe to toe after getting yoked up. He'd've gotten his face torn off like Alan Minter. Marvin's still in denial about his idiotic strategy of fighting right-handed.

I've only watched the fight three times, don't think I could handle it again. Each time I scored it like one of the judges--that night, 10-2 Ray; first replay, 7-5 Ray; second replay, 7-5 Marvin. As stated in the article, very difficult fight to score in a vacuum.

Shame about Pat Petronelli. Good man, but he and Goody ****ed up by agreeing to 12 rounds instead of 15, and not screaming at Marvin to go southpaw after the first round.

Bartman doc a solid B+. Cubs fans deserve another 103 year drought but Bartman had to lose the headphones at some point that night.

I loved Hagler as a kid, too. He was a local guy, and he was a MONSTER in the ring! He was tough, he was cool. He was humble, he was confident. He ducked nobody, took on everybody, and beat them all, IMO--I thought he easily won the Leonard fight, using my father's scoring system: "If the round is close, give it to the champ! If you want the title, you have to TAKE IT from the champ, you don't get the close rounds," with most of the rounds in this fight coming down to this very tie-breaker. I thought Leonard only TOOK 1-2 rounds, tops, and I was as shocked as Marvin was when I heard the decision.

Haven't read the oral history yet, sounds good.

Ken Dryden continues on his quest to ban hockey, ever since he retired from the game... (as a lolgoalie, for those who don't know)

the league has taken big steps this year, and i think they'll continue to tweak this stuff and get tougher on head shots as we go along here and see what is necessary. but it's pretty easy for him, being outside the game now, to call for an outright ban on fighting and big, legal hits.

...If some rules are changed, players and coaches will find ways to adapt and to gain a competitive advantage, because that's what players and coaches do...

this is what i'm worried about, Ken. i can just see it now, the Carolina Hurricanes dynasty of midget players skating around with their head down because it's illegal to lay them out, diving everywhere and winning 25 PP's per night. sounds awesome! of course my primary concern should be about the post-retirement quality of life of say Jeff Skinner, right Ken?

Boxing was my favorite sport. I was a scrawny dork, Hagler was the opposite of that. In addition to being scary & mesmerizing in the ring he was very cool, calm & charismatic out of it.

He'd been the #1 contender for two years before he got robbed by the draw against Antuofermo, then had to wait another year for the Minter fight and his moment of triumph was ruined by the riot. A case can be made that he should've fought Valdes for Monzon's vacant title instead of Bennie Briscoe. Valdes & Monzon certainly wanted no part of him at that point in their careers.

The Antuofermo fight was his first real national exposure, but I'd been reading about him for years, so I felt I 'discovered' him. And then it was seven glorious years as the undisputed pound for pound champ. Lord, the Hearns & Mugabi fights were something to watch live.

Yeah, the Leonard fight was brutal, but Hagler & the Petronellis have no one to blame but themselves. More than anyone in boxing history they KNEW they couldn't trust the judges.

Leonard was the GOAT at psychological warfare, read Marvin perfectly. He demanded more money and that his name be first on the posters (originally none of the alphabet boys were going to sanction it; eventually Sulaiman went to Arum on his knees). Hagler went ballistic and traded the ring size, gloves and 12 rounds for the dough. Leonard fought a brilliant fight but he couldn't have gone 15.

Hagler not fighting southpaw was moronic. Leonard had struggled with the outclassed southpaws Larry Bonds & Ayub Kalule, which was why I thought Hagler would wipe him out...

And now I'm def past tl;dr

Your dad sounds like a good guy, but his system has lead to some of the worst decisions in boxing history.

Speaking of dads & Simmons, Simmons getting a little dusty talking about JackO's dad got me a little dusty. I essentially had no relationship with my dad after age 4, he died when I was 16 and I hadn't seen him since I was 14.

It's not illegal to hit them, it's illegal to hit them in the head. You can hammer someone not looking where they're going, just don't make the head the main point of contact.
