No. His stuff would be good if it were true, but he simplifies stuff do much it's basically fiction presented as fact. For example, the first result when I google 10,000 hours http://www.businessinsider.com/new-s...00-rule-2014-7

he's a really great writer and tells stories about cool subjects you might not be aware of. the problem is the 'THE PLURAL OF ANECDOTE IS SCIENCE' part.

It's a pretty sweet gig when you don't compete against the highest level of competition, have people claim you're better than every single person in history who ever competed at that level, and then anyone who says otherwise is a monster.

Gladwell is terrible in non sports areas. Google "Gladwell igon value". I find him super frustrating because he's a very talented writer who picks interesting topics. But his content is bad, like a dumb person's idea of a smart person.

Yeah, there's lots of those people that sound really smart to dumb people but sound really dumb to people who actually know about the subject at hand.

hahahahaha how did I not know about igon value, that's amazing.

Top five dumb smart people, GO

But Gladwell frequently holds forth about statistics and psychology, and his lack of technical grounding in these subjects can be jarring. He provides misleading definitions of “homology,” “sagittal plane” and “power law” and quotes an expert speaking about an “igon value” (that’s eigenvalue, a basic concept in linear algebra).
lol

I remember wincing when I read igon value, but I think his writing is fantastic. His podcast "Revisionist History" is very good. Gladwell doesn't sound dumb to me, even when he talks about subjects I know a lot about (statistics). He does have the problem of translating an anecdote into a theory, but there's enough substance in many of the topics he writes about.

^ thats how i feel. Ive read a few of his books and really enjoyed them.

Its kinda like when you write so much and kinda the same way youre gonna have some misses, there have been a few topics im more of an expert and kinda chuckled at the things he writes, but on the whole he is way positive. So much more good than wrong.

there's nothing wrong w/not being an expert. how many journalists possess expertise about the topics that they cover? don't think that's why people dislike gladwell. he often appears to siphon expertise and in some cases has misunderstood/misrepresented research. whether it was misunderstood or misrepresented prob depends on how smart you think he is. i don't happen to think he is dumb, but it is certainly easy to look dumb when attempting to pass of the expertise of others as your own (e.g. igon values)

Yup. Some blowhard local radio host claimed that anyone who doesn't agree that she's at worst somewhere around 200 (men's rankings) is sexist. He followed by saying he doesn't know much about tennis but even he knows that.

Gladwell isn't dumb, he's just a bull****ter. But it certainly takes intelligence to be able to convincingly weave a narrative around a bunch of cherry picked anecdotes without coming off as an obvious hack

Listened to Gladwell's new podcast on how much golf sucks/is evil. Some of the most well crafted and enjoyable liberal propaganda I've ever heard. Gotta hand it to the guy. Last season was solid too, addictive content.

I wasn't that into the golf one as the next two. The best so far this season has been the second episode.

ESPN with naked people all over its frontpage for like a week. zomg why do we care what these hockey players look like naked?

but the bigger issue is making their website NSFW. I log in to check my fantasy baseball team and just then a tech brings me a problem and sees naked people on my screen.

Was talking about this with a friend today.

This isn't as easy as the FS1 execs think. Sports like nascar, ufc, mlb are more niche and don't really lend itself to the type of discussion that people like Skip, Sharpe, Whitlock, etc have. They just aren't as hot take heavy like NBA and NFL.

Discussion of those sports just works much better on a niche or regional level.

You pay Skip, Cowherd to talk about LeBron's legacy or Dak/Romo, who is better out of Trout/Harper just isn't going to go as far in that format.
