The Ringer is graduating from Medium’s publishing platform to Vox’s, thanks to a new deal with the SB Nation parent company.

Under the agreement, Vox will host The Ringer, sell revenue for the site and share in its revenues, though Bill Simmons and company will maintain editorial independence.

“This partnership allows us to remain independent while leveraging two of the things that Vox Media is great at: sales and technology,” Simmons, who created The Ringer in 2016, said in a statement. “We want to devote the next couple of years to creating quality content, innovating as much as we can, building our brand and growing The Ringer as a multimedia business.”

The Ringer has indicated before that it planned to move off Medium, likely in response to down-sizing there, and apparently it was just a matter of finding a new partner.

As online media seeks a profitable path forward, this partnership provides an interesting template. Instead of spending gobs of money to develop and maintain a state-of-the-art publishing platform, The Ringer can pay Vox to use its already-established infrastructure.

It will be interesting to monitor whether this deal results in any sort of content collaboration between the Ringer and SB Nation or any of Vox’s other properties.
thank the gods they can now focus all of their energy on creating quality content!

They have some good stuff. Their GoT stuff is usually solid and I like some of their NBA writers (Tjarks) and I like Robert Mays for football. Kevin Clarke is also good.

Simmons went downhill when he started trying desperately to appeal to millennials

A lot of you have this weird idea that you should judge The Ringer by the content that doesn't appeal to you, rather than focus on the content you enjoy.

You aren't supposed to like, read or watch every single thing a particular media entity has to offer, just consume the parts that interest you and move on.

If you guys held HBO to the same standard that you do The Ringer you'd be so busy complaining about Sex and the City and Girls that you'd never even notice that they had The Wire.

except that like none of it appeals to me

and judging from their traffic numbers i am not alone

in summary: they ain't HBO

Newest Simmons pod features an NBA Finals preview with expert analyst Tate suggesting the Warriors "Hack-a-LeBron" in the series. I turned it off.

Can't listen to it at work, but I assume the clip posted above is the exchange of:

Salisbury - "Just to be clear here Jon, you don't know what it's like to play in the NFL"

Clayton - "I mean to be fair Sean, neither do you"

His obsession with Tate is a little weird. It would be one thing if Tate actually had interesting responses.

Every time Bill asks Tate to confirm his ridiculous takes and every time Tate complies.

Bill: "What do you think Tate, don't you think it makes sense for Philly to trade for the 1st pick and give up the 3rd pick, Saric, Embiid, the Lakers pick, Covington and maybe next year's first?" Tate: "Yeah, I can see that working for both teams."

Also, I love how much Bill is sucking up to Kevin Durant. His latest take, "Are we sure Kevin Durant has anything to prove in this Finals. He's already proven himself over and over."

Are you kidding me? Durant is a great player but he has more to prove than anyone in this series. He jumped from a championship caliber team to a stacked team that just beat them in the conference finals.

I mean, I get it, he had him on the podcast twice and now needs to make sure he plays nice. But, that was too much.

Also....

Clayton - "It was different with you Sean, you would play a game and then sit for 2 years."

That was good stuff.

As long as it's anyone but Will Cain. Why fire DK if you are just going to replace him with an even bigger troll?

ESPN needs to realize that not everyone wants every show to be First Take, and the majority of people listening to Russillo are probably tired of all the other BS that ESPN is putting out. His next co-host has to be someone who doesn't intentionally try to troll or interfere.
