Stuart Scott has passed away at 49. Cancer.

Sad.

It's so weird, because obviously I grew up watching Stuart every morning as a kid. I'm 31 years old, and I think I'm literally the perfect age to have seen him as much as possible. I loved Stu and KO and Dan Patrick and all of them. I thought they were all so cool.

Then briefly, I went through this period where I really didn't like Stuart. Maybe I thought he was fake...or maybe he just rubbed me the wrong way for the place I was at right after college but I wasn't a fan of him when on the air.

When I heard about his cancer struggle and how ridiculously badass he was to be doing MMA during Chemo treatments, and how much he loved his kids, and how much everyone at ESPN was effected by his sickness I knew he seemingly was a really genuine person.

I was pretty sad this morning to hear of his passing. Obviously everyone knew it was coming, given that a 15 minute video was already done and he hadn't been on twitter/TV for about 2 months. But it's still hard to see someone that you enjoyed so much as a child pass away. It's also difficult to see someone who is in great shape, and fought as hard as anyone could possible fight, still go down to cancer. Just makes you realize how ridiculously ****ty that disease is.

+1

The hating Stu was never really his fault. ESPN went through the Booyah! Era where it was all people shouting at me, everything bombastic and over-the-top. Stu was the first guy to have that flair so he was kind of the symbol of ESPN's terribleness but that was unfair. Stu was always a professional with flair and personality. He made SportsCenter both informative and fun.

I couldn't have been sadder today for the passing of Stuart Scott. I was watching live as Hannah Storm announced it (wow at having to do that) and saw most of the tribute after. I was really sad. I was never a Stuart Scott fan, but by all accounts he seemed like a very genuine dude and loved by all who he worked with. I've also watched him for 20 years and I recognize that certain parts of the lexicon were invented by him and just absorbed over the years. I was really sad today. I can't explain it. He was a true original, agree or not with his style. In a world of generic talking heads, he will be sorely missed. RIP #booyah

The following is from the RIP thread, but I'm going to respond it here because I don't want to be the guy that derails the memorial, but I think it is interesting as it relates to sports media.

This thread has been interesting to me, I'm older than most and am somewhat surprised by the impact Scott had on people. To me he found a really lousy middle ground between forced attempts at hip and stuff Bristolness. The degree to which other people don't seem to have seen that has me second guessing that impression. Either way seemed like a good dude, and even if I didn't love how it turned out I always appreciated his attempts to make ESPN be something that wasn't just for 40 year old white dudes.
I think Dids pretty much nails it.

I definitely loved Stuart Scott when he first came on the scene but I was also probably 14. Looking back, he was just another guy forcing his tired catch phrases in to highlights. Another guy who rarely gave any thoughtful insight, but made sure he stamped his brand on to whatever sports you were supposed to be watching, a trend that has continued to worsen to the point we are at today with guys like Skip and Stephen A.

That's kind of silly. Scott is most famous as SportsCenter anchor and host of post-game shows. It wasn't normally his job to give analysis. He did highlights and he did it in a memorable way. The only point of Smith and Bayless is to give analysis--and they are bad at it. No one is going to remember Bayless and Smith as fondly as their remember Scott. You're not going to see Hannah Storm and Rich Eisen tearfully remember them.

Scott was never called upon to provide insight though- that's not fair at all. SAS's predecessor wasn't Stuart Scott- it was yambags like Mitch Albom and Bill Conlin on the Sports Reporters. (or all the non-sports debate programming like Crossfire and McLaughlin group).

Every Sportscenter anchor tries to create their own brand with catch phrases and what not. Berman, Patrick, Olbermann were all doing it well before Scott. The only thing that made Scott different is that he was pulling references from a culture very alien to ESPN at the time.

My beef with him is just that I thought he was corny as **** and came off more as a stock ESPN broadcaster trying to sound hip-hop than anything else.
