Re: Sports Media Discussion (Grantland, 538, etc)

I'm not sold on that being true. ESPN is ridiculous. And I personally believe they were issued a warning about doing something like that (because he so quickly went after his bosses) and was prolly getting suspended regardless. Maybe not to the three weeks he got.

I will acknowledge that I could easily be wrong. Just my opinion as I've had more time to think about it.

The 70 Knicks 30 for 30 is very good

I do think Simmons comes out of this looking weak. You can't ban me!, you're banned! Probably doesn't matter much in the long run.

Welcome back, Simba. He went something like 3-11 on his picks not including tonight, after his gambling "revelation."

Karma for screwing up his year total by claiming 50-0 or whatever, imo.

Something I was wondering for a while - is Mike L. Goodman who writes about soccer for Grantland the same MLG who used to post on 2+2 around like 2005-08?

Yeah, I tend to believe/understand this, it just seems like it would have been super easy to mention Pythag or something, just to acknowledge that people have in fact in the past come up with attempts to measure team quality that isn't strict W-L.

Oh god, how amazing would it be if he still finished with a losing record despite crediting himself with so many Ws?

He was a hell of a poster. Still remember his "there's no deserve in poker" rant. I learned a lot from his posts. Met him once at WSOP, too. Enjoy most of his soccer articles now

Yeah, really cool.

Figure 9-2 has me confused tho. How has white made 3 moves?

Yeah he completely screwed this up. Surprised nobody else noticed. The game went:

1. Nf3 d5
2. g3 Bg4
3. b3

So the white pawn on g2 should be on g3. Without this the narrative makes even less sense than it already did. Nate's analysis of the b3 move is pretty random. Deep Blue is not "threatening" to take the knight in any sense. The reason b3 gets immediately out of book has little to do with it being wild and crazy and everything to do with the fact that Bg2 is incredibly logical after g3 (and Kasparov in fact plays it a couple moves later).

Re: Sports Media Discussion (Grantland, 538, etc)

Like to read that article youd think that the purpose of Bg2 was to defend the knight but it has nothing to do with that. G3 and bg2 are basically two halves of the same move, Kasparov just delayed the second part.

Those databases relied on the assumption, however, that Kasparov would respond as almost all other players had when faced with the position,23 by moving his knight back out of the way.

Re: Sports Media Discussion (Grantland, 538, etc)

Yeah, the way Nate writes/diagrams, it sounds like it started

1 Nf3 d5
2 b3 Bg4

And then Team DeepBlue was shocked that Kasparov didn't play 3 Ng1??.

Yeah, that bit is also totally screwed up. 538 apparently can't afford proofreaders.

I'm glad you linked this. I had kinda written 538 off and haven't been checking it out at all.

I interviewed Murray Campbell (head of programming team for Deep Blue, featuring prominently in the article) not too long after that match for a paper I wrote in HS. He was surprisingly easy to get on the phone for some completely random HS student, lol.

I also talked with Joel Benjamin, Grandmaster who was consulting for Deep Blue's programming team, at a chess tournament a couple years after that.

One thing that struck me the most was how much they geared Deep Blue to specifically play Kasparov. I mean, it makes sense since that was their opponent but there's a very good chance no other top 10 GMs would have had as much trouble. Deep Blue likely had a lot of blind spots but they didn't think Kasparov would realize how to exploit them in a short match. He was prepared for Deep Blue from a year before but unlike a human opponent, Deep Blue's style and ability of play changed drastically. Kasparov's approach fundamentally hadn't plus he had almost nothing to prepare with except his brief match the year before. Deep Blue had Kasparov's entire career of games.

Interestingly to me, Campbell seemed to be of the opinion Kasparov beat himself while Benjamin kind of thought "he" had out-tricked/beaten Kasparov himself.

Neither seemed to want to take much responsibility for Deep Blue not offering a rematch and blamed it on IBM (may be true). That was the most frustrating thing at the time to me. Kasparov never got a shot at revenge and a few years later computers had more clearly surpassed humans at chess. I think psychologically he would have been able to recover and have been much better (but still not all that well) prepared in a 3rd match.

Oh, also it's very common ime for a non-serious chess player to make tons of errors when writing about chess. It always seems weird since many can be so easy to fix if you just have a serious chess player proof the damn thing but, meh, I'm not surprised.

It's nice to be fondly remembered (though I'm not sure if the running game was me...it's been a long time and I'm not a Va fan particularly).

Somebody mentioned they just discovered I was an old school 2+2er so I figured my name must have popped up somewhere.

So, hey y'all.
