I've never got the Roastmaster General title either. He seems to get outdone every year. Giraldo was consistently better, others stepped up year to year. Jeselnik blew ****ing everyone out of the water this year. I've never come away thinking Ross was the best.

yeah, kinda got this impression too sadly. every time i hear him he's telling one of his own jokes and laughing maniacally after it. i also pretty much hate this simmons/carolla/kimmel/ross/sal "we watch nfl games together and blow each other" camaraderie.

i still think he is often the best though. his last couple were mailed in but this time every joke was a good laugh (though i guess doing 17 minutes helps).

I didn't think it had anything to do with him being the best. Just kinda like, the leader of the group. The comedian in charge of the roast.

That's fair I guess.

Yeti,

I find Sal flits between funny and harmless so I don't mind him. Carolla I like in the doses I get through Simmons. Listening to his show regularly got old pretty fast though.

ehh it's not that i necessarily hate the people i listed (fwiw i enjoy sal nfl podcasts), i just hate forever hearing about them from bill. maybe it's just me but any time a sentence begins 'me and carolla......', 'haha, yeah me and kimmel......' or 'my buddy caaahnnahh......' i just want to jam a fork in my eye.

I listen to Simmons to hear casual fans banter, so I for that reason I generally like Sal. I am a fan of Carolla, but he hijacks every conversation he has ever been in and will repeat old shticks or talk over people who have something interesting to say.

Carolla was so, so much funnier (and smarter, imo) in the loveline days.

Re: Bill Simmons/Sports Guy Containment Thread

I don't get any excessive Simmons hate. It's like crapping on Stephen King for not being Shakespeare or McDonald's for not being Joel Robuchon.

At this point, if you don't know what you're getting experiencing Simmons you're completely out of touch and if you know and still read/listen you're either a glutton for punishment or enjoy it for what it is.

Fwiw I'm excited about his website. I hope he uses it as a launching point for some pretty seriously talented younger guys.

Re: Bill Simmons/Sports Guy Containment Thread

I dunno. Most people like his podcasts to varying degrees. Most think his columns are varying degrees of awful as well, which is pretty fair.

I am looking forward to his site as well, but not his columns. Which is a pretty bad thing to say about a writer.

Re: Bill Simmons/Sports Guy Containment Thread

I've never liked Ross' standup or roasts that much, and this latest podcast confirmed my dislike. His insights on the lastest trump roast were interesting but everything else was extremely drawn out, mostly uninteresting and completely unfunny. For a "PROFESSIONAL" standup comedian he truly knows how to suck the funny out of simple banter. I just found it odd how Ross would take such a serious take on basically every topic.

Another Millman podcast is up. I've come full circle on this gem. He's so awful I look forward to hearing what he has to say.

My favorite part about Millman might be how unprepared he is for every podcast.

yeah it's so strange. "Person X made a great pick with FSU over Notre Dame" and he says it like with this reverend ball-washing tone as if the guy correctly predicted the apocalypse.

Thought Jacko was pretty funny today.

Yes I normally hate Jacko but the ripping on Uconn & women's sports was good stuff.

Also did I hear them say "Pitcher X was lucky last yr"? I thought they hated advanced metrics.

Simmons has embraced some of the advanced stuff. Last I heard JackO talk about that he brushed aside talk about RBI not being a good stat with Limbaugh-esque ignorant disdain.

Yeah Jacko ripping on Calhoun/Auriemma was pretty awesome. Kinda surprised ESPN let them do that.

He probably thinks the 2 people who correctly predicted the FF on espn are geniuses. I'm sure he'd rave about how they saw things that obviously everyone else missed.

The podcast today with the Boston announcer was really unbearable, which is rare for me. Spending 30 minutes talking more about the same trade he's been ranting about since it happened was really brutal.

Haha, you could almost see Simmons give Millman the bird over the phone when he said that.
