Not for nothing, but it's this type of nitpicking that people hate. Suppose he said 25 seconds? Would that have been OK?

It's like correcting someone that says Chicago is 1,000 miles away by pointing out that it's 950 miles away. Who f'ing cares?

They`re prob my favorite band, got to meet them last year and they signed some stuff personally to me. Some of the nicest celebrities I have ever met.

of all the reason to hate Simmons, ragging on him b/c he underestimated by 10 seconds what a really long homer trot was, is a really poor one

It is odd that he was kinda short like that. Maybe it was an over-correction to his usual extreme hyperbole.

Luckily for you, this chat with your folks was made easier by your previous rollerblade discussion.

Ehh.... it doesn't get me mad or anything, but he's a very well compensated professional writer, and he should be reviewing his work to see if what he's saying passes a spit test. It's not an outrage, but it feels pretty dumb and lazy and worth mocking on the internet.

Aside from the intro, I've only read the two Klosterman columns and The National oral history. I really enjoyed all three.

LOL, me too. Then I was like "Wait, isn't there a golf tournament called The National?" Third try is the charm, I suppose.

The man likes writing, and he wanted a freer medium through which to do it. More power to him.

More power to him, if he gets out from under the espn editorial umbrella.

If you've followed the Deadspin/Tommy Craggs stuff related to this (which you should, there's a singing pink gorilla)- Craggs was of the opinion that ESPN is still way too involved and that they wouldn't be as free as they might like.

Cliff notes:

Grantland wanted to hire Craggs, who writes for Deadspin. Somewhere before things got finalized, Craggs wrote a column slagging somebody at ESPN, they had second thoughts, Craggs had second thoughts and he had to meet with some ESPN bit shot to kiss his ass, and AJ from Deadspin sent a singing pink gorilla to the meeting to serenade them with the Sportscenter theme.

http://nymag.com/daily/sports/2011/0...ca_talk_d.html (interview w/Craggs that might be more on topic and interesting)

I really hope the editorial divide for the site is far beyond just being able to drop a couple f-bombs. Having said that I've enjoyed the first few days.

The article on the National was REALLY good imo. It gives me hope that Grantland can be more than page 2. That was a legit long form magazine piece.

yeah there was a time when i read the site daily, but hell if i go there more than like once a month anymore. they really seemed to go off a cliff around the time Will Leitch left, and now it's just like some weird tabloidy site. maybe it's better for traffic though to be the crappy TMZ of sports, or whatever they're going for.

+1, this was fantastic.

Interesting that Charlie Pierce wrote an article for Grantland considering Simmons acted like a bitch and deleted him from the paperback version of the Book of Basketball when Pierce wrote a negative review of the book for deadspin.
