As a big fan of subtle humor, I really enjoyed Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, Tennenbaums.

With that said, I just couldn't get into Life Aquatic. At all. Like it's evidently too subtle for my limited comprehension. Apparently I need to watch it again in order to "get it" but don't particularly wish to.

Bad Santa not getting much love is kinda surprising. The scenes in the office with Ritter and Bernie Mac are just so ****ing funny, especially in character. Like the one where Ritter is going on and on about why they need to fire Bad Santa and Mack is just sitting there smoking, eating citrus and barely paying attention to anything he's saying:

I don't think the problem is "subtlety" so much as "Wes Anderson has run out of original ideas and themes".

I always enjoyed this takedown of Wes Anderson:

Quote:
Wes Anderson doesn’t make movies anymore. He creates overly precious paintings inhabited by emasculated man-children who knit sweater vests to the accompaniment of Belle & Sebastian while fantasizing that they’re macho enough to skin a caribou with a pocketknife. The set pieces to The Life Aquatic are stunning, but watching this film is like visiting the Natural History Museum. It’s a beautiful building, but most of its pleasures are filled with lifeless things.

i really liked the life aquatic, but i think if i saw it now for the first time, i would think it was pretty meh. i didn't like the royal tennanbaums and the darjeeling limited was just insulting. i suspect mr. anderson has shot his wad.

I found The Life Aquatic pretty boring. I liked The Royal Tenenbaums, but too many precious, wounded, privileged-or-dying-to-be-privileged kids I know absolutely loved it, which was a real turnoff. I still like Rushmore the most of his work.

Ha, that's really well put.

Although I may prefer Rushmore, Tennenbaums definitely had its moments too. The whole Hackman/Pagoda relationship and Hackman faking dying to ingratiate himself with the family was great. But the critic is right in that "lifeless" is an accurate way to describe a lot of the characters.

This guy has The Rock as number three on his list, can't take him seriously when he hates on the only good movie Michael Bay ever made.

I mean, you really think The Rock deserves the Criterion Collection treatment? And even if it is the best Michael Bay movie, it's still pretty stupid.

He's pretty awesome in this movie too. Has great standup if you've never seen it.

Whoa whoa, someone needs to fess up because

I didn't even open that thread until I was randomly accused of this so went to see what it was about. Probably never would have moved it, at the very least it's too good for French BBV.

Yea, plus unlike the other threads in French BBV, this one actually had a legitimate question/topic.

EDIT: ok, so it wasn't the tuckster or meb... who's the villain?
