My basis for comparison of other colleges and the cities they are in are Duke and UNC (Durham and Chapel Hill), UGA (Athens), Emory (Atlanta), Tulane (New Orleans), NYU (NYC), USC (LA), Florida (Gainseville), Auburn (Auburn), and Georgetown (DC). All of those are colleges I visited between enrolling in undergrad and age 23 that clearly surpassed Ann Arbor in terms of campus environment and things to do within 15 min of campus. Ann Arbor was better than Georgia Tech (Atlanta) and Notre Dame (South Bend) and thats it.
Have you actually been to USC's campus? Or just Los Angeles? USC's campus is garbage, and you have to value weather an insane amount to prefer it over Ann Arbor and South Bend.

disagree

basically, I rate campuses on "how likely is one to slit their wrists here"

USC is much lower on that scale than Michigan or ND. The lack of dreariness cannot be overstated.

The south's college campus' just ****ing crush. UNCWilmington is absurd nice and 10 minutes from the beach. UNCAsheville is in the prettiest city in this country(my completely misinformed opinion but if Asheville was 200 miles east I'd have never left).

I just can't believe places where you have to put on winter coats could even come close to that. God I hate the ****ing north so much.

True that... too bad my wife has to live around a big publishing city, ie Boston, New York, or Chicago.

I spend as much time as possible away. If I cannot wear beer logo flip flops, it's not somewhere I want to be.

The crips shoot people, I think.

Anyway, Ann Arbor has a good park system, a good mix of homes, good schools, a variety of restaurants (not just campus bars), excellent city services, good healthcare. Weather might suck, but it's not like it's any different than Bloomington, Madison, Syracuse, Eugene, or whatever else from the north.

It's significantly different from at least a few of the cities listed
avg snowfall - 58.4 inches
avg snowy days - 53.2

Bloomington, IN
avg snowfall - 15.5 inches
avg snowy days - don't even track

I've spent the majority of my life in Chicagoland. My wife is from way south Illinois, Rend Lake area. The difference in the weather from one to the other is huge.

almost every town has what you mention. The weather is not something that changes as easily.
USC is a short drive from so much stuff. Sure, next to watts, but it's not hard to get to the beaches or Hollywood Hills, or whatever.

Ann Arbor is nice for hunters and white militias.

There are schools good enough and cities interesting enough to justify being cold and away from good scenery. The University of Michigan and Ann Arbor, respectively, are not among them.

He's clearly talking generally. Otherwise listing schools as a plus when you're attending college would be stupid.

Most colleges, especially the land grant ones, have more open space on their campuses than Michigan does, so they don't need the local town to have some uber park facilities - almost all do anyway with transient professors paying the property taxes

Ok, so pick the one example. It has weather similar to the average b10 school. Jesus.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, and Forum Discussion

one of the few good things about Northern schools is that first 60 degree day in March when the flesh comes out

comparing that to what you see on ASU's campus, for example, all year, though, is a very sad subject.
