From the middle of 2016 to the middle of this year I was involved in commercial litigation. The matter was settled in May, 2017 and my lawyer was told to stop all work (no more billing). Total fees about $100k. Out of nowhere, get a bill for $15k yesterday. The itemized bill includes work as far back as 2016.
Was able to suppress my initial urge to firebomb their office, so how to proceed?
Well with any other profession, your play would be to rip them a new ***hole about their dumbass billing--like are we talking about someone just filled out their timesheets for last year, or did you just lose it for a while? End up paying ~half of what they want. But...these are lawyers so they'll probably wind up ripping you a new ***hole AND charging you for the time...which they may not even bill you in full for a year or so. Maybe hire a lawyer to talk to the lawyers?
I recently started watching 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' and Larry just went to see his lawyer and ask her why he got the bill. Seems legit.
