I have an atm I walk to before I get my hair cut.

Paying small businesses in cash to save them the fee and allow them to not claim it is pretty huge.

Pretty sure a not insignificant % of small businesses I like (ethnic cafes, barbershop, etc) would be out of business if they were forced to take 100% card.

lol, no they wouldn't. you seriously think these places are operating on razor thin margins like amazon or something? 3% of a small barbershop is going to be $20/day or less. you think they are closing their doors over that?

They stay in business because they avoid paying taxes because they deal in cash.

i don't? are you not saying that a % of the small businesses you like would be out of business if they were forced to give up ~3% of their revenue for 100% CC transactions?

i just was thinking a typical barbershop since thats what we're talking about. Seems like some place like that doing < $1k/day in sales cutting hair is not going to close down shop over $20-30/day in fees. That said it definitely hurts their bottom line but i have to figure they would lose that much in customers if they were truely cash only.

You bolded the wrong part, see bware's post.

It obviously isn't a 100% guarantee they would shut down, and you do get people like Nick's Roast Beef who skim millions (and are about to sentenced to fraud and have to pay back $2M), but especially in areas where the cost of rent is skyrocketing, it is way harder for smaller niche places to make it.

If they can't afford to pay proper taxes then that's their fault. They should obviously be paying taxes on the profits no matter how they are paid so cash vs. card shouldn't matter there. If paying by card helps combat tax fraud then that's a positive.

So my parents asked me to help grow my fathers small welding business and I've been spinning my wheels for the last few weeks trying to create a plan. I've worked a lot of positions, from helper grunt to doing office manager/secretary **** to crafting bids so I understand the ins and outs of labor and payments received. But I have no clue how to create business, improve our advertising/online appearance or really anything wrt improving an existing rinky dink operation. Anyone got ideas? And feel free to make other suggestions that I didn't specifically ask for.

A little info, the only advertising they do is lolyellow pages online service for around $400 month, apparently YP also drive up our local "google ranking". Currently employs 2 welders full time w a revolving door of ~5 part time helpers/manual laborers w around 150k in business a year but could easily support 300-400k yearly w no added workers or costs so small but quick growth isn't to be worried about.

Restraints on this mission are numerous and somewhat self-imposed. The family refuses to take on much debt, philosophically opposed to it, and loathes the idea of investing into the business though I think there's some leeway here. The company carries all basic insurance but is not bonded so we are blocked from large jobs, which to me means we have to win the war thru quantity of work instead of 2-3 large jobs a year.

I've done a few things since I started helping a few weeks back. Stopping at active construction sites and giving our card and info to project managers and the workers who might need welders/iron workers. Using my free time making bids that other general contractors send, unsolicited, to like 10 similar welding businesses looking for the best price of the group.

Like I said suggestions are welcome as are other resources I could study or look at.

Do people get welders from Angie's List?

Quote:
Angie’s List Advertising Costs

The cost of advertising on Angie’s List is negotiable. $200/month is a typical bill, although according to Marketing Consultant Victor Bilandzic, the cost can vary from $20/month to a few thousand dollars depending on the size of your “reach,” or the number of people who could potentially see your ad.

Reach is determined, in part, by where you advertise. Angie’s List is divided geographically into many different zones. A consumer who logs in from Scottsdale AZ, for example, will obviously see a different list when they search “plumber” than somebody from Tampla, FL. Even within a city, there’s likely to be different zones for each neighborhood or region.

As an advertiser, you can place your ad in a single zone or multiple zones. The more places you show your ad, however, the larger your potential reach and thus the more you’ll have to pay. When selecting where to advertise, you should use your CRM software to figure out specifically where your customers live and stick to those areas.

Another important note on price is that it’s negotiable. According to a former Angie’s List salesperson, the price can be negotiated down to 50% of the initial offer. So whatever price you’re given at first, you should seek at least 20% to 30% off (or higher, if you have some patience and bargaining power).

So what does a bill of $200/month get you?

According to Bilandzic and a few other sources, Angie’s List has a cost per click (CPC) of about $4 to $8. In other words, businesses tend to pay between $4 and $8 for each click to their website. So a bill of $200/month should get you between 25 and 50 new visitors to your website each month.

This cost is a little bit higher than Google and Yelp, according to the same reports. But common wisdom holds that Angie’s List buyers are a bit more “primed to buy” compared to users on Google and Yelp, who may just be casually looking. While there aren’t any exact numbers available on this, businesses who advertise on all sites tend to report much higher conversion rates from Angie’s List than the others.

I would imagine almost all your work is commercial, and not residential. But I dunno.

Angie’s List specializes in service-based industries like home repair and medical practices. You won’t find restaurants or retail shops like you will on Yelp. Some of the most popular categories on Angie’s List are house cleaning, handyman services, HVAC, plumbing, remodeling and painting.
