You'd mentioned trying these before and being taught, but video and posting to the form check thread in H&F is a good idea for feedback. Was there some specific problem you had like an old joint injury or something?
Are you doing squats with high bar or low bar? If you've only ever tried high bar (the typical) version then going with low bar may be helpful just because you haven't learned bad habits for it yet. Have you read 'Starting Strength' for explanations of how to do it, and/or watched videos on their site?
Never max. Just go up in 10 or 5 pound increments. Also, never say never.
