Yeah I guess with fewer teams the NFL has more variance about how highly regarded someone might be, and all it takes is one team to really like you for your draft position to shoot way up from what the average valuation might be. Plus there's the issue of team needs clouding casualfan's judgement

Yeah, a casual fan will often think "WE NEED A LINEBACKER HERE!" but if the team thinks all the linebackers available suck, they're not gonna take one. It's not like they don't know it's a need.

(OTOH, teams have gotten a lot better at drafting lately. "We want Sapp!" wasn't that long ago.)

I kind of follow the MLB draft, but I pretty much only care about how many extra early round picks a team has, and if they are willing to go over-slot. Also, not really the draft, but care if they are willing to spend on international prospects. Write-ups on guys are fun to read, but don't really take anything away from them. Of course, with the new CBA, teams can't really go over-slot anymore so even less to follow.

MLB draft is so hard to take seriously when it doesn't include all the ferrin folks.

In the NFL draft, we have no idea where other teams have guys on their draft board, so we're pretty much at the mercy of what the talking heads on ESPN have to say, or maybe even worse, our own impressions based on the five minutes of highlights we've seen.
good points - the comparative offers is a gauge I use often

I'm pretty sure there are lots of posts by me tilted that the Vikings drafted ADP/Harvin/Chris Cook/Tyrell Johnson over Brady Quinn/Michael Oher/Jimmy Claussen/Brian Brohm respectively.

NBA draft is easily the best draft because everyone knows that anything outside the lottery is a crapshoot (and probably includes the late lottery slots too), so no one tries to act all authoritative about anything other than the top 10 guys in the draft. The NFL draft is the exact opposite, the whole thing matters, so the people who go overboard are really overbearing trying to act as though they have valid opinions on who the fourth best left tackle in the draft is. At least we've all watched a bunch of Harrison Barnes' games when we call him overrated or underrated, almost no one has done that when they discuss the middle linebacker from Iowa picked in the second round.

This is the same for the MLB. There's usually a consensus #1 pick, then guys who are obviously going to go #2-#7, then lololololol

Made even worse by the fact that no one watches high school or college baseball, so the knowledge base is by far the worst

Yeah, but fortunately this has the solid side effect of basically no one talking about it like they know anything.

All of the good talent is exempt from the draft anyway, which only serves to make the draft an even bigger farce.

i knew the umpire was a huge donk and the pitcher was terrible, so a walk was pretty much 100% a lock as long as i didnt swing the bat. i therefore accomplished the rare game winning feat: the walkoff double walk.

oh BOY was the other team mad.

preemptively to the haters:

Spoiler:
Was in this exact same situation (except my team was ok, and we were playing our hated rivals, the other law clerk team), first 3 pitches are either 3 feet outside or behind me, so I'm swinging at anything. 4th pitch is high but down the middle, I hit it hard but get a little under it, the CF has to run back and makes an alright catch. At which point our team drunk and one of the girls on base forget/don't know the rules and we end up with the game ending triple play.

Probably have said it before but I understand that people like different things. Hunting and fishing are baffling to me as they seem boring as ****, then again I play and watch a lot of golf but understand if people don't like it, to each her own.

But mock drafts...this is one thing that just seems stupid beyond belief. Hey let's all sit around and project what players teams are going to select. Seriously, WGAF? Most ******ed thing ever. Teams are going to pick who they are going to pick and the clear "winners" won't be known for years or decades.

Most draft discussion pretty much sucks for reasons already stated but mock drafts take the stupid to a whole new level.

tuq is right. the "draft grades" the day after the draft are just lol. and i freely admit to having no clue who is a good pick and who is bad on draft day. by the 10th pick they are already picking guys i've never heard of.

the absolute best is when the draft is in like the 4th round and someone gets picked and someone on SE says "ZOMG WHAT A STEAL, HE WAS A PROJECTED FIRST ROUNDER LIKE 2 MONTHS AGO."

like you have a god damn clue
