yup. they have tried to change the laws to privatize liquor sales a few times now, but the beer distributors holding the monopoly on beer/wine sales and the liquor store union guys lose their minds every time and manage to block it.
ill never forget a phone call i got when working in a state rep's office one time from a guy who owns a beer distributor telling me he has "special training" to recognize "VIPs" (visibly intoxicated patrons) and underage buyers and there's "no way" with open season on booze sales in grocery stores that cashiers could get the "special, high level training" he has to prevent the atrocity of a sale to either group
i had to try not to laugh, altho i dont think the guy i worked for had a stance either way
they now have these special machines in grocery stores that sell wine from the state store where you slide your ID in and have to have someone at a remote location look at you through a camera and cross-ref it with your ID to authorize the machine to dispense you wine. it's just so mind blowingly inefficient.
