American Greed is kinda awesome, but 90% of the episodes go like: people put their entire life savings in the hands of some shyster who claims 30%+ returns and are shocked when the ponzi scheme eventually collapses and they lose everything. It's pretty hard to feel sorry for these idiots.

Tyco guy who threw a $2M birthday party for his cougar wife on the company's dime and embezzled a ton of money even though he was already making $100M+ per year and didn't need to steal at all may be my favorite.

Yeah, for the most part it's "lol rich people trying to passively make 3x the market", but some of those cases really are ridiculous. Like Bernie Madoff had decades-long relationships on a personal level with many of his clients. And he kept sending them pieces of paper saying they got market+n and he knew they wouldn't be pulling all their money out. Pretty scary stuff what manipulative people are capable of. I mean a single wayward person can convince a group of people to go out and not only buy Nikes but also cut off their own dicks and hitch a ride on a spaceship that will ride in the wake of a comet.

Or the Jonestown stuff. People falling over left and right and idiots keep drinking the koolaid. In their defense, it was probably hot that day.
