I have met lots of med school graduates who left practice to do something they found useful (research, med device development, Ken Jeong).

I've met lots of sharp lawyers who left corporate law in their early 30s because two million is enough.

Med school always seemed like a terrible idea to me. lots of work to get in, lots of work while in, and lots of work in residency with little flexibility throughout all while offering a job that pays well, but not spectacularly once you're allowed to do the work itself at age 35.

All of this minus the financial upside is why getting a PhD in the hard sciences really isn't worth it either, especially if you intend to go into academia. The supply of PhDs has increased massively and the programs have effectively become indentured servitude for the candidates for ever increasing amounts of time before the degree is conferred. Granted, you're not going hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt, but working on your degree until 30 and riding out two postdocs for the privilege of earning more than 30k by the time you turn 33 isn't that attract of an option.

what do you propose?

keep in mind an 8 figure pay day upon completion of med school is a lot different incentive than just earning your MD. you dumbass.

Oh yeah, definitely forgot 'narcissistic and delusional enough to plaster your grinning mug all over any available billboard, bus, bench, and television commercial and greedily exacerbating an already overly litigious society.'

Creed meet and exceeded all expectations. Just a fun and fine film. Absolutely pitch perfect in its (dozens of) references and homages.

Strongly recommend seeing in a good theater. I'm also very drunk.

My smart cousin went to med school and ended up getting really fat and stressed, so that told me everything I needed to know.

I actually went into undergrad intending to later go to med school. To be honest, one of the main things that turned me off of it were the other students in my classes who were dead-set on going. They'd be freaking out about, say, a big embryology test and I'd ask them what the big deal was. They'd say that they have to always get great grades because they have to go to med school. I had a version of this exchange several times: "Why do you want to go to med school so badly?" "Well, uh, duh, because then you are a DOCTOR." I just assumed these people ended up miserable.

I worked for a few years in research in biotech, then got a masters that focused more on the business side of the industry. I don't regret not going to med school at all (I pretty much guarantee I could have.)

Yeah, a good friend of mine from high school actually went to Stanford med school and had ulcers by 30. He was one of those guys who was all "I'm going to be a doctor no matter what" since middle school. Some people handle it fine, I really think it has to do with your mindset of why you are doing it.

Chem 109 and Bio 102 were notorious "weed-out" classes. And I TA'd one of them. And it was true. Man, kids are stupid.

I TA'd lab portions of a couple bio classes and it really is amazing. Actually I'd basically teach it, the prof would pop in for like 5min. I remember once we were doing something with newts and a girl asked me, "So are they like, made of cells?"

EDIT: The weed-out class at my school was probably organic chemistry. Huge enrollment in that one, inorganic chemistry or upper-level bio classes? Not so much.

def the 2nd level "weed-out" here was Chem 251 (organic chem 1)

I mean I got like an 86% and it was solidly an A on the scale, shows how ****ing crazy it was. As an added challenge, half of the difficulty of the class was understanding the Indian professor's accent
