Probably PC games should have their own draft, Mario devices aren't quite in the same league

I understand people wanting to show their appreciation for handhelds, old games, pong...but you have to draw a line somewhere. I would consider making the NES/Arcade/handheld a wildcard era. I want to concentrate this draft in order for making it easier for everyone to judge. The Rap and Youtube drafts are fun but ffs they're all legit opinions. I want winners and losers in this draft. Handhelds, arcade, two button games...we can't draft masterpieces in their own right but that's so of the point, to condense things thus making each pick more valuable.

Exactly. I'm giving both sides a chance to draft however they want really. I only play PC gaming when I get a new laptop every 2 years or so and by then all of the games I'm playing are "kind of" outdated.
I agree with all of this, however, we will have a strong recency bias unless people are forced to pick some old-school games. Really, aside from one or two, the idea of going back and playing them is much more compelling than actually playing them. So, if we are setting up a draft in this context, picking the old games are going to hurt you. However, if people are forced, then we will actually have people picking out some nice games that still might have value today.

Really, if there are 20 drafters, I think 20 legit games can be found from each category which would have appeal today.

Well how about this then.

14 rounds, 4 rounds spread out entirely devoted to these eras.

NES/Master System/Pre NES Console games
Handhelds
Arcade games
Phone games

New random draw for selections for each of the four rounds. Could do one round of these for every two rounds of the regular format.

What if we did a video game draft where everyone drafted 15 games. That might be fun

Good call, given that people generally hate to talk about video games, I can't imagine much discussion will come of it. Would probably suck.

It's the same ****ing draft either way. edwhfruhwkj

The era idea gives people more incentive to take older games too. If we pretended they were all released now then the new games would be favored.

None of you are making compelling arguments and I will hit if this continues.

You're making too much of this. Just make the stipulation that the games aren't scored based on their graphics/sound/etc. now but at the time they were released.

There's going to be plenty of talk either way (they're video games ffs, nerds love games, and since we all found 2+2, we're all at least 1/8th nerd).

Just pick some ****ing games, it'll be fun regardless of how it's done.

only by people who dont know anything about games. if someone wants to take modern warfare 3 with the first pick then fine, leaves more classic goodness for me

i was really into amiga gaming when i was small, then PC, then N64, and now modern consoles. dont make me pick a dreamcast game or an iphone game or a handheld game, i dont give a **** about them

All I know is the youtube and rap drafts are kind of meh because they're so disorganized and no way to judge. People love rap but I don't see a lot of discussion going on there. I loved watching those youtube videos but it fizzled by round 7. The added rules exist to generate MORE discussion.

They're not really that binding either. 1 from each era from everyone is doable. Adds more strategy to the picks.

Yes, add in stipulations that allow the people who want handhelds and arcade games to please someone...displease someone else. My idea was for a 1 round 1 pick only for arcade/phone/handheld too. I think that would be fun.

Dreamcast was a great system too. Someone will steal a few good picks from there likely. And if you don't have to take a DC game...it's from an era.

This is just brainstorming too. When I make the interest/sign up thread we can hash out the details and if everyone wants a free for all then they'll get it obviously.

Yeah, can't argue with this. Rap thread is particularly AIDSy because of this imo

also, i'm mostly interested in how to deal with sports franchises. like, we would be selecting a specific madden, correct? not just the whole franchise? this seems tricky to me cause it would seem silly to pick anything but the most recent madden with the best graphics and rosters, but at the same time i would argue to death that madden 06/07 on ps2 are better than anything on 360/ps3, gameplay-wise.

i think the goal should be to try and create your own gaming company built around the stable of games you select. so you can focus on something specific like shooters or rpg's, classics, whatever, or you could pick pac-man, nba jam, and mario golf. but you have to draft on creativity, originality, selling value, etc.

these are just loose thoughts though

I think you've got the right idea when you talk about picking one. What good are better graphics and updated rosters (which you can get anyway) when the gameplay is ****.

"Can not draft a ported game. If its multi console with one release date then can take the best version out of whatever system it's on.

Can not draft a sports franchise sequel. If you think Madden 11 is the game ten no one is drafting Madden after that. Can take sequels np. "

From earlier post. I'm willing to lift the port thing up though. Up to a certain date. Maybe a few months after.

Could do eras like
2x pre-1995
2x 1995-2005
2x post-2005
2x Wildcard (phone, arcade, extras from one of the other categories, w/e)

I'm definitely in for draft as long as it's not like 20 rounds. Prefer some sort of category breakdown for sure.

Madden not even best football franchise, but sports games should definitely be one year only. Not sure about Mario/etc, maybe one per console?

Man, I still play my 8-bit games. So many of them are well designed and easy to pick up and provide great replay value.

I think you are really underestimating how old some of your potential audience is. I'm 30, but most of my video gaming was done before college, with only a handful of titles since then receiving significant time. People who are older than me might have fondness for even older games. I don't see a reason to exclude them.

(But that's just my opinion; I likely won't participate.)

Agree that 8-bit games retain fun-factor more than a lot of games after them. If I was going to be stuck on a desert island with one system and its complete library of games, I'm pretty sure I'm going plain NES over anything made pre-PS2 era.

If I close the NES era then it's to protect those who would have selected games from it. I'm open to opening it and leaving it as an option but not a necessity.

Sports are one year only obv yes. Mario and any other sequels are free as they come. Up to you guys to decide whether the sequels were better or not.
