Good to see Henry continuing to fight the good fight over there. I'm sure Knoxy is concerned.

Yeah, this is actually no stretch of the imagination. PR and viral marketing firms will contract themselves out to various corporations... offering services of creating a "buzz" on online forums, blogs and other sites. This sounds like common sense, but the lengths they go to can be surprising.

A few years ago I was a mod on the VN/IGN forums which, at that time, were some of the biggest video game forums you could find online. 60 Minutes ran a news story one night about a guy who posts about video games on online forums as a job. He posts posing as a regular user, often mixing in random posting about other topics, in a very informal fashion to create buzz about the game and talk about how good it is. They blurred out the screen names, but one of the shots on 60 Minutes was very clearly a board I moderated. One of the admins on the site took the time to analyze the photo, look at the avatars and figure out who the user was. He had tons of accounts that you would NEVER suspect were paid marketing accounts that he used to post about games and prop up products. He fit in with the community seamlessly otherwise. While sort of sad, it was also pretty genius.

Seeing as this was probably 4-5 years ago, it's hard to imagine how far they've come now. Contract posters employed by PR firms to advocate certain viewpoints on heavily trafficked forums? Sounds like it should be almost standard.

Gold Box deal on the left, all day long. $39.99 (presumably tax free) for FIFA 12, although I assume most of the hardcores bought the game pretty much right away.

I'd sell my account or just use it to promote whatever they want for a reasonable fee.

As a grizzled veteran of football games, stay away it's a trap imo. Fifa 11 was perfect in terms of playability. This goes too far, becoming able to defend competently will take hours and hours of effort.

Interesting that adgci is using up his remaining post to actually say decent things and not look like a complete tool. Unfortunately...he has 8 posts left. Very sad. (lol...yeah right).

Without wading back into that thread, anyone who has invested as much time and effort into it as has that 239 user is either 1) getting paid, or 2) a ****ing weirdo. I realize most of us waste time reading/posting about generally pointless diversions but that's well beyond anything "normal".

Karak's story is interesting nonetheless. I would guess that one user's influence would be negligible enough that it would be hard to get ROI. I could see them approaching an established, respected account with a comp offer because at that point they would be piggybacking their credibility. In other words, the user is already posting, now they're being paid to post a certain way. From that angle they could probably be had fairly cheaply.
