Was pretty amazed when I found out the football coach at my HS made 125K a year. Was a big school in Texas where football reigns king but still.

The football coach at my high school was such a ****ing idiot it was unbelievable. After playing a year I was never surprised they never won.

Pretty surprising they'd be bad considering Canton is a powerhouse and Plymouth is developing into one. You'd think they get the same type of kids.

Whats the private school scene like out there?

In Jersey it's impossible to compete with private schools(the good ones) that are similar size to you due to the massive recruiting that goes on. The top 3 or 4 teams in this state are private schools with kids from NJ, PA, CT, and NY.

The problem is the draw for schools isn't random. For outsiders, my high school is 3 high schools all on the same campus. You have one home school you basically play sports for, but you can have classes in any of the three schools. It's about a 5 minute walk between each school. There's over 6k students total.

Basically you 'draw a chip'. If you don't like your chip, you can redraw. I've heard if you make a big stink you can just choose. If you have family that went to one school, you can choose to go to that one. Basically all football players try to go to Plymouth or Canton.

Back in the day Salem used to be a powerhouse, when they didn't have a ****** for a coach.

Do the kids just support whatever school does the best? I'd find it hard for the student body to really feel like a sport team is "theirs" in that kind of environment.

The better teams get more people to come to their game, but there are significant rivalries between each school across all sports. The two big sports (soccer and football) are really the only ones that have significant amount of kids change their affiliation for.

I was guilty of being ignorant. And I don't know if I've come to terms with that yet. Especially as I see Georgia Southern each week come one week closer to winning a national title.
