Their last five albums have debuted in the U.S. Billboard top 3. They've sold more than 30 million albums lifetime and they sell out huge venues wherever they tour.

Radiohead suck. Never seen Arrested Development but I'll say it sucks too, American comedies just aren't funny.

I don't know if there is any band in the world that would get top billing at a festival over them in the last 5-6 years. Maybe U2?

Are you implying Beyonce isn't massively more popular than Radiohead?

She is one of the best and biggest mainstream artists currently. Is anyone arguing Radiohead are, or have ever been a huge mainstream act in the same way?

Even w/ LolEuroes, it's ABBA. I mean, fine, whatever, but 4th on that list is amazingly prestigious. She's ahead of Madonna, Elton John, Mariah Carey,... I mean, if you polled 100 people that weren't affiliated with this sort of thing, how many would actually think ABBA has sold more records?

isn't being mainstream pretty much a requirement for being extremely popular?

Unless there's some strange alternate definition of "popular" that I don't know about, my response is as follows:

wat.

Spoiler:

She's been pretty popular too, and had a surprisingly sustained career for what's supposed to be teen throwaway pop... so I'm not sure what your point is.

We can say they've transcended the alternative label they used to have, but they aren't a "pop" act or mainstream in the same way that an artist like Beyonce, Rihanna or others are. Even if they would be billed above them at festivals and whatnot, they're very different acts and it's hard to compare "pop" acts like Britney Spears, Rihanna, Beyonce and such to Radiohead, Muse, Coldplay in terms of popularity.

no, it's actually really really simple, pop acts are more popular by almost any definition of the word.

You have a valid point given the nature of the music industry nowadays (and how many people would rather download and spend their money on live shows), although in this case Beyonce is really popular

All I said was Radiohead is more popular than the television series Arrested Development, and people are trying to figure out ways to prove they're not the most popular musical act in the world.

Popularity can be pretty directly related to how many people like you. What does genre have to do with that?. Beyonce and Briteny dwarf Radiohead in terms of number of fans, so they're a lot more popular. The top-billing at a festival argument is dumb since festivals are a pretty tiny portion of actual popularity among the 300 or so million people in this country.

This is fair. I don't like comparing them at all either, and it's not just because I think AD was the GOAT and you'd have to pay me to sit through a Radiohead album.
