It's off-air because 99.9% of TV shows don't get 8 seasons. 3 is much, much more then usual, especially for a show like AD.

Arrested Development had to be marketed pretty poorly or something too. I didn't watch it while it was on but its incredible. Lots of my friends have never heard it but when I get them to watch it they say its one of their favorite comedies ever.

it didn't work because you have to watch every episode to get all of the jokes, and that's a commitment people weren't willing to make. 3 seasons is still a lot, and probably close to optimal.

I think Community falls into this same problem, but luckily NBC is so desperate that they'll probably be able to get 4 seasons.

Community doesn't have this problem. AD sets up jokes like 4 episodes in advance (see the Arm Off pic above). Even watching AD weekly it is tough to have the memory required to get all the jokes in AD. It is really the perfect show to grind through on DVD because your memory is fresh enough to get all the jokes.
