I'm a huge Dylan fan, but c'mon son. His voice never arrived at a wall to hit.

Not complaining, I saw him on his DSotM tour at the SkyDome, amazing show. Terrible venue, amazing show. And I'm a maaaaaassive Pink Floyd fan, but lol Waters is a ****ing uberdouche.
I didn't realize Waters was a douche until I saw him on I think it was Conan earlier this year. One of the worst late night TV interviews I've ever seen. Dude wouldn't answer questions except for saying "go to my website."

Have you actually seen him live or are you just pulling this out of your ass? Obviously I know what you're saying, but I think you're just glossing over my point based on "lol dylan's voice is bad".

No more a waste of effort than arguing about sports.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, Foodblog, and Forum Discussion

I love Pink Floyd, I hate Roger Waters with a passion. Only reason I overpaid for Waters tickets back in the day was because I felt it would mean more to me to see Floyd songs played live than overpaying for David Gilmour just to wait until the encore to hear Echoes.

i'm sure you already know this, but Radiohead are definitely a must-see live, if you're into that kind of thing. i've seen them twice now, and both are probably in my top-5 live shows OAT (might be top-2, lol). i'd see them every time they came to town really, and i'd recommend that any fan do the same.

lots of complete shows on Youtube if anyone doesn't believe me.

as for Tool, i wonder if they're more of one of those bands for people who play, or are in bands. i mean i guess they're really good and technically proficient, but i don't know if they don't have that kind of pop appeal to ever be considered the best by the masses. i wouldn't put them anywhere close to my favourite bands, even though i do like they, and own all their albums, 1 EP, and 1 APC album.

lol, yeah i saw him ~5 years ago, the singing wasn't great, he wasn't even playing the guitar (heard his hand was [censored] for that), but he WAS playing the keyboard. and every song was some alternate arrangement from the original, which i hear is standard for him. even as a fan i didn't recognize like half the songs. of course the super fans next to me, who saw 3/3 shows he played here, loved it. i thought it was ok and had a good time, but wish i could have seen him in his prime. as we were talking about the show in the lobby afterwards with a bunch of people i knew, one guy was like "I THOUGHT IT SUCKED!!!". i was sort of afraid that the super fans would attack, and i'd actually be drawn into a fight at a Bob Dylan show, lol.

i tend to agree, even as someone who kinda likes RHCP, and owns a couple albums. i don't really think that they should be in a "great bands" discussion.

I am certainly not going to claim an ability to be logical and rational about every subject!

That said, on some level a sentence 'I don't understand how people think Radiohead are awesome' is less "wrong" than 'Kobe Bryant is better than Micheal Jordan imo'. There is an objective truth with respect to the latter, whereas - despite there being different levels of ability and innovation when it comes to songwriting and musicianship - some ears are wired differently and personal taste is never going to be turned around.

Mmm, to put it another way: since you were say, 21, how many times have you been significantly turned around from your initial opinion on a movie / band / book? By contrast, how often have you believed something to be true when it comes to sport and subsequently discarded that belief when presented with stats / analysis you had never seen previously? I would be confident that the latter scenario has been experienced a lot more by most of the people posting in here.

This is on the money for me. I've been to many, many gigs over the years and Radiohead stand out. They also deserve a ton of credit for taking songs that wouldn't strike you as workable live material and reshaping them successfully for the stage. They don't just 'play the album'.

I mean, regardless of whatever objectivity is present in sports statistics, we could all be spending on effort on things that legitimately make the world or our lives better instead of bull****ting about our personal interests.

Again, I'm not disputing this. But, in terms of discussion and debates you can enter about personal tastes, I prefer to gravitate towards the ones where there is progression from initial positions some amount of the time...

Yeah, for my money, I just enjoy discussing things I like to discuss, even when no objective conclusions can be drawn (and I have changed my mind about music based on a discussion, although it's almost always to get me to listen to something I'd never listened to before or given up on early).

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, Foodblog, RadioHeadBlog and Forum Discussion

saw Radiohead at the Metro in '96? '95 maybe (The Bends Tour)
Riv in '97 (first OK Computer Tour)
Rosemont Theatre in '98 (second OK Computer Tour)
Grant Park in '01 (Kid A tour? - Buckingham Fountain in the background was awesome)
UMB Bank Pavilion in '03 (St. Louis for this one, all the rest Chicagoland)
Lollapalooza in '08

The show at the Riviera might have been the best show I've attended.
They will always be a soft spot for me for hitting my teenage angst just right with The Bends and OK Computer.

I think Local H is the only band I've seen more than Radiohead not that I think about it. Just saw them a few months ago. Average age in the crowd was over 30. Still had to stop the show due to *******s getting aggressive in the crowd.

at Neil Diamond I can imagine that. Doesn't seem like something the kids would get into beyond the hits. Personally I like the SNL storytellers sketch.

my point about Dylan is that no, he was never a great singer technically, but he was always expressive in his own way and at least mostly intelligible. Sometime around 2005-06 that fell apart.

OTOH, I was @ the game the last time Nebraska came to Champaign to play the Illini (1986 for trivia). Think they had 74/75k for that game. The stadium has shrunk since then Lou Tepper, Ron Turner, and Ron Zook will do that to a program.

The music chatter yesterday caused me to dust off my old cd book which I haven't even glanced at in probably five years. So many awesome bands that I totally forgot I used to love

Bouncing Shouls, Built to Spill, Get Up Kids, Jawbreaker, Neutral Milk Hotel, Electric Six I had almost completely forgotten about fkkk I miss being young then I found my PRINCE mix and it was all over
