That's the thing, I find that "real musicianship" stuff that some people love always just comes across as elaborate wanking to me. I liked Aenima a lot, but the rest I could take or leave. I'm interested in music as a form of expression, not as a technical exercise.

Oh I dunno, I think it makes sense in a few ways. They both have insanely devoted fans, they both are not afraid to completely switch up their style, and they're both bands. And of the two I prefer Ween, thus poor man's version

ldo I'm biased because the big Rush/King Crimson/Yes fan in me absolutely loves the complexity and chops, but I really do think in Tool's case, they live up to the immense hype and deliver the goods. Their Amiphtheatre show in '06 on the 10,000 Days tour is still one of my greatest concert moments ever. Just an amazing production.

im sure tool is technically proficient, even brilliant, but they sound like crap and elicit musical connection.

radiohead is ok i guess. kinda depressing and absurdly pretentious but they sound ok often enough.

The worst thing about Tool (no offense to Geddy) are there fans. It seems like 5% of ppl think Tool is the greatest band of all time and the other 95% don't have them in their top 100.

I don't really know where I'm going with that, but I think Radiohead and Modest Mouse are the only shows you can go to now and have an average age of like ~22 despite each band both being at their peak in popularity, having been around for 15-20 years and achieving their critical peak around 10-15 years ago. From my experience anyway.

Haven't seen either live, but I feel like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day have this same sort of thing, or maybe did a couple years ago.

I wrote a bit about Green Day and RHCP then deleted it. It was more teenagers and late 20s/early 30s for each when I saw them. Pretty different to a lot of bands that have peaked in popularity recently. Not really similar to Pixies, Radiohead, Black Keys, Phoenix, The National, Arcade Fire, The Strokes or other headlining acts I've seen receently. Felt kind of out of place, but they both were good. Probably more true 5-7 years ago.

Almost every concert has a younger crowd. I go to probably 20 a year and at 30 am basically always in the eldest 10%.

Even bands who haven't done anything good for years, and were never that big anyways.

Reel Big Fish show last weekend had tons of 19-22 year olds. Kinda blows my mind. Their "peak" was when I was in HS forever ago, but still a young crowd.

I think more young people just go see shows.
