That's how it was set up in 2 different gas stations in Oregon, where it's freaking illegal for me to pump my own gas (talk about lolwtf laws).

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, Foodblog, and Forum Discussion

so i'm driving down my street the other day, well the street off of my street really, but anyway i see some chubby woman and a kid rollerblading. the chubby woman rolls over to the curb on the left side and sits down. so now i'm watching the driveway where the kid is circling around on the right, just in case the idiot decides to fly out on to the street in front of me, as kids tend to do. anyway, luckily it's not happening this time, but as i roll past the house, while going down the middle of the street as opposed the right hand curb near the house, just in case a kid jumps out from behind a bush or something, the woman (mother of the kids there, i assume) hollers at me SLOOOOOOW DOOOOOOOOOOWN!!!

i check, and i'm going 40km/25mph. technically the speed limit there is 30km/20mph, but whatever, i feel like i'm being careful here, and this is a slow enough speed to stop if something happens. but anyway, this kinda tilts me for a minute. but then as i think about it, i come to the conclusion that it probably wouldn't if maybe the word "please" was in there somewhere, or if her tone wasn't set to nagging *****.

fyi: this place seems owned by typically modern annoying, overprotective parents, who would rather yell at people driving in their neighborhood instead of maybe telling their kids not to just run out into the street and get bounced off of a car. they didn't have them out that day, but typically they have a couple of these signs obnoxiously set up halfway into the street marking their driveway. there are a couple places like that in the area.

anyway, i didn't flip her off of give her a dirty look, didn't gun it (didn't slow down either), didn't do anything at all.

so who's the bad guy here? me for driving slightly too fast and being a dick, or annoying mom, or lol kids, or all of the above?

Going 25mph when you're supposedly worried about kids running in front of you is waaaay too fast.

Then again, I've seen 3 peds v autos in the ER i'm volunteering in the past 3 weeks, so maybe I'm biased.

25 mph is too fast in that situation, especially if the limit is 20

to be clear, my visibility isn't really obstructed in this case (by cars, trees, whatever), i can see the kids from way up the street. also i'm familiar with the houses that are danger spots with kids in the area. there are other spots where i do always go slower, because there are always cars on the side of the road, and trees/bushes and so on that these dumb kids tend to dart out from behind without looking.

that's not how it is in jersey. there are upsides and downsides to both - the advantage is not having to get out of your car.

Agree 25 MPH is way too fast in said situation and I drive 15-25 over in most areas.

there is no downside to slowing down. just go 15 mph. the parents will appreciate it and the odds of an accident (even though they are very low already) will go down even further.

i said it was too fast mostly for community customs and perspectives and the piece of mind of parents who are inherently paranoid.. i doubt that you personally blasting thru at 25 is all that dangerous.

Pumping my own gas gives me a feeling of humility. I like it. Should be optional in states like nj, fact its mandatory is perplexing.

I had a friend when I was 16 who worked at a gas station. He gave me free gas, which was awesome. Really nice kid, name was dylan. I think he got fired.

Doesn't really matter. You'd never forgive yourself if you hit one of them.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, Foodblog, and Forum Discussion

probably also should have asked people to say whether they have kids or not (if they want to) as they weigh in, as i think that's a factor. i obviously don't, can you tell?

yeah i got you.

lol, yeah exactly. this is my point. i just feel like that's still a slow enough speed to react to something that i'm specifically watching for anyway. but i can see how goofball parent might disagree.

just also kind of tilting how, you know if these people are that concerned, maybe they shouldn't treat the street like their personal playground, especially if your kids are prone jumping in front of a car. take them to a park or something, there's one like a 1 minute walk away ffs!

yeah obviously not.

just for the hell of it, anyone have the average stop time/distance on 25mph vs 20mph?

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, Foodblog, and Forum Discussion

The really annoying thing about the Oregon law is when you pull up to a closed gas station in the middle of nowhere at night. Any normal state you could just pay with a CC and and fill up, but not Oregon, which has tons of rural areas where that would really help.

I get that its a jobs thing but (without getting too politard about it) how is it economically beneficial to pay people to provide no service at all?
