I'm interviewing for the position of applications engineer next Monday. I have never been on an interview in my life. They said to prepare for 3 hours. What could they possibly ask me about for 3 hrs?

i had an interview a few weeks ago that last 5.5 hours and they wanted me to come back a week later and i was there for another 2.5 hours

applications engineer? is that the line of work you want, or you just need a job? Applications engineering kinda blows, unless you actually dig talking to customers.

The stuff I'm good at are mechanical engineering, thermal engineering, and applications engineering. I happen to be proficient at all three. I think I'd rather deal with customers than just be handed tasks. Do you have a specific disdain for applications engineering? Honest question.

no. i've never talked to them. I just know I would hate the work. I knew one guy who went from design to applications and was back in design within 8 months.

I like design.

sorta like sales engineering i guess. tech support and debug to customers. i think they do some stuff to help sales along too, like contrast and compare options to customers. probably more to it. i can kinda see the appeal for some people.

you combine your technical "know how" with sales. So you try to secure orders by dealing directly with customers but you also have to know what the hell you are talking about. It could pertain to the software industry but in my case it doesn't.

I'm sure they do. In my industry though I don't think this would be applicable.

Ok yeah if you have sales skills and dealing with people and also have decent technical skills (which isn't that common of a combination) I could see that being more interesting than straight engineering.
