There's a piece of equipment where i work hooked up to an old computer with IBM OS/2. That piece of **** is almost more user friendly than windows 8

Also, my aunt got a computer with windows 8 on it. Classic Shell makes it usable.

Look, I'll accept my failure here, but maybe you can tell me why buying a Dell was a failure in itself? I just wanted a fairly cheap laptop to use when, well when I needed to use a laptop. I had an HP laptop and it had massive overheating issues to the point where the motherboard had to be replaced 3 times. I'll make no excuses for Windows 8, it is the devil's feces. What the hell brand of laptop should I be buying?

Dell is fine

Just read reviews really. Lenovo is probably best for work laptops, there's a bunch of niche laptop makers for gamers and a bunch of companies in the middle that are about equal including Dell. Individual models vary more than company quality honestly.

I bought an Acer laptop because it was cheap, had good battery life and a 17" screen. Since the only thing I do is browse the interwebs and watch some vids, that's all I needed.

windows 8 is actually really good, just get one of the many mods that gives you a proper start menu

Same question but for desktops? I don't need robust HAL-level computing power, I mostly just use office, watch vids, pause tumblr gifs, and lurk fack.

oh and also: the last vestiges of my bs poker career are these two dell 20" monitors: in a perfect world I'd add a 27" (or bigger?) and flip the dells to vertical and have three monitors. I basically just want it that way because I need a bigger one for netflix/whatever and I guess because of the tron factor. Do I need a special graphics card for this?

Which mod is the best? The lack of the start menu is like #1 LOL at Windows 8.

Best for desktops is to build your own, customization is the best and it's the cheapest. It's literally doing a bit of research and an hour plugging things into other things. Probably can pay a kid $20 to do it if you're adverse. I helped CPHoya put one together he's super happy with his.

I know of a friend who uses this since win8 came out:

it's $3 to buy and i'm sure you can find if pirated somewhere. I have no clue if it's the best option or if something better came out in the mean time.
