Sapphire and Tonic is a great drink.

Some people just don't dig on the fact it tastes like gnawing on bark.

guess I got lucky then. I bought a handle of Glenlivet 12 a month and a half ago when I was stocking my bar. I like it, but am no expert so not sure if I would like other stuff better. Pretty elite with a single large ice cube in a rocks glass and scotch poured over the top of it.

Claret is the liquor for boys; port for men; but he who aspires to be a hero must drink brandy

I need to buy 6 bottles of wine for the weekend to fill the rest of my wine fridge. I don't drink wine except when its the only thing others are drinking. Any <$20 suggestions to have around?

Also, what mixers should I have for cocktails to have around for people who I have no idea of their preferences of liquor? Right now I have basically no mixers or supplemental drink items aside from cherries and olives, but every liquor I would need.

Occasion is my sister's wedding where I will be hosting the out of town people for a few hours between the reception and going out to the bars. His friends are almost exclusively beer drinkers (easy) and hers are mostly typical girly drinks/wine.

Girls are easy too

Couple bottles of decent vodka (Absolut, Ketel One) and a couple juices and tonic water/club soda

Then some diff wines too, girls are pretty easy there too. Get a couple whites (Chardonnay, Riesling) and a couple reds (Cabernet, Pinot)

Yeah, but Dr. Johnson also said that Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Guess what my colors don't do? Run, that's right. But he did have that cool quote before Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, so there's that.

I would say for a fully stocked bar mixer fridge, you should have tonic/club soda, diet versions of both of those, prob cranberry juice, cherries, olives, lemons, limes.

Digables has a solid wine list, any variety of wines for around $15-20 per bottle should be fine as standards to have laying around.

A dry white like a sancerre/sauvignon blanc is usually a strong choice for mixed company. I've had great success with New Zealand sauvignon blancs.

For a mixer/drop-in type event that's only gonna last an hour or two, I wouldn't worry about researching good wine vintages. Very few people care about wine to that degree, just get a couple of whites and a couple of reds that aren't Kendall Jackson or Yellow Tail and people will probably think it's fancy and you went all out

A good whiskey for when you have company:

It's a quality bourbon that is in the same price range as Jack/Makers

It's something different and more interesting than Jack or whatever yet still common enough that people are comfortable trying/drinking it

Yeah Bulleit and Knob Creek are my go-to entry level bourbons to get used primarily in cocktails.

Yeah, great choice. Back when I didn't know good booze I liked Maker's, but now I consider buying/drinking it a pretty huge leak.

I have some nice whiskey/scotch that I keep around, but honestly I wouldn't even consider using that stuff when company was over unless I knew specifically they enjoyed it.

I think a lot of people overthink food/drink decisions when hosting medium or big groups of company

Yeah some people enjoy an Imperial IPA or a bottle of Pappy or some pricy Bordeaux, but that's more of an exception than a rule. Hosting company isn't about serving **** you like, it's about serving what the average person will enjoy. That means a decent bottle of whiskey, a decent bottle of Vodka, some common wines that people recognize and can pronounce, and then a few beer selections (one for people who like craft beer, and a couple super common domestic options like Budweiser or Miller Lite)
