Btw, seriously this is open to anyone. If you think a certain set of posters are causing a ton of problems for the forum, please PM me or the other mods. Its one thing if say one mod thinks a certain handful of poster is causing a problem, but if the posters of the forum like that trend then we're good. But if a large number of posters who are contributing to the forum view those posters as a problem that holds a lot more weight in my mind.

i dunno. sounds like you are proving my point. yall desperately want there to be a problem so you do your best to ignore contrary evidence, or more accurately, reality, and attribute actions you deem disruptive to ppl you dont like.

You guys are right, I definitely need to step up my posting ability. I'm sorry my awful posting has spawned the downfall of SE. I might have to go back on the roids, but it may be worth it to resurrect this forum.

bowens and bobbo both make great points imo.

If someone makes an argument or a point that you think is stupid:

A. Ignore it
B. Tell them their argument/point is stupid and explain why
C. Nicely disagree

Are all acceptable options.

I'm 99.9% sure I know who you are talking about, and I don't necessarily think this is true. Some confrontational debates between regs are healthy for the forum.

To all, what exactly is the problem with this forum? Is it just memetard posts like "U mad" and such, or something else? Please post quotes as examples.

Trolling has its place but it shouldn't be used in the situations that bowens and Etats are talking about. If a new poster comes in and wants to have a legitimate discussion, he should be responded to legitimately. Trolling is counter-productive and it happens far too often and limits discussion a ton in SE lately.

just my opinion, but I prefer "lol" type responses to noob idiocy to ones that explain why the newbie is wrong but use a super ****** tone. I have a couple of specific posters in mind.

imo the latter is several notches up the ladder of assbaggery from the former

Def agree fwiw. The worst part is that the bolded group are all definitely good posters, just choose the wrong tone a lot.

people that spend a lot of time posting and supposedly thinking about sports that don't read up on advanced statistics generally deserve to be patronized.

casual fans who just wanna watch sports and not think about it don't really though.

F60, it's posts like this that are the problem, not the solution.

Regardless, this is the biggest difference; I'm NOT one of those new guys who comes into a thread and says "Kobe >>> LBJ right?!"

If I was to do that, I'd present the best argument I could. When I say Landry is "better"/more important, I don't just keep repeating the hypothesis... I give supporting proof.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't using myself as the victim here, either - I didn't take what you said to mean that I was the problem. I just wanted to explain the other side, because I can totally empathize with those *other* posters.

I agree that minimalist modding is optimal.

Meh, there were many posters who at the time sent PMs thanking me for making the forum readable. All we did was "no name calling" and rigorously enforce it for about a month, get rid of the *****OFFICIAL**************** threads (that was in every single thread title) and ask for more informative thread titles in their place. That's it, but it was hugely effective and traffic started increasing well above any general water level increase.

About the only other thing I ever really did was move single team season threads into their own subforum. I still don't know if that was good or bad but it sure makes the front page better for me personally, so I'm happy with it.

I mean, you're free to disagree, but there was a lot of data on traffic at the time, and anecdotally I can tell you lots of people said the changes caused them to start contributing/posting more. Considering that people now ***** about "lol x" thread titles, I think it shows how far we've come in the whole readability regard.

At any rate, I think that there's certainly a case to be made for reigning in some of the stuff that clearly adds no value, and every time we've banned a poster permanently, it's been like "why didn't we do this sooner". I think we bend over backwards to not have to do that stuff, but if someone like RJ insists, then I'm happy to accommodate him. If Epi/TuT/Victor (as an example, not the only ones) go through phases with truly zero add (well, with negative add, if you will), I'm to the point where I'm not gonna apologize for them anymore and green-light bans for trolling/sucking.

Meh, I put no value on my modding now other than the fact that I don't do much of it, which we agree is the right approach. However, having mods who agree with that approach and don't screw it up by overmodding provides value. The alternative is Dids, the classic example of overmoderation.

As a poster, I'm merely ok in general.

C'mon now. This is clearly false and only explained due to extreme bias as a result of real life friendship. Assani has clearly contributed stuff, but has frequently also been a mega distraction in a negative way on no shortage of occassions. Especially wrt SE, we're talking about the introducing FBG draft threads to this forum, above average basketball discussion and............what? Biased football analysis and Denver is an elite team takes? Assani adds value for sure, but you're neglecting the negative plays in your calculus.

As an aside to everyone, there's a whole lot of "SE sucks right now" that really should be more correctly noted as "NBA discussion has been tarded up from time to time lately". Prob a little dramabombing going on making it seem worse than it is.

For the record, TZ seems to be doing fine. There's a lot less STUFF posted in there because of gameday threads. I haven't spoken about league basketball since I created a H&F thread (except when directly asked) nor have I live blogged, except once I think when the new Radiohead album came out.

Others have followed the lead... This year's TZ is really tame. It's actually a little bit lame, too, which is unfortunate.

I concur with this, actually. The image above what Phildo posts is actually ridiculous, specifically because if you WANT to be a casual fan, by all means, BE ONE. If it makes your enjoyment of a sport/game that much greater, well,

but people here actually spend a lot of time thinking and analyzing etc., so... they by definition are NOT casual fans. So if you're going to walk half the road, you may as well walk the rest and actually understand a little bit of what it is you really like (etc etc)
