***My attempt to get Richard Tanner to become a golf-viewing fan (Part I of ?)***
Dickard Tanner is a good poster. Even though he roots for a team with a horseshoe up its ass. He should watch golf because he is a good poster and he just hasn't seen the light yet. I will try to show him the light. And my taint if he wishes to view it.
This week is a good week to try to start watching golf. Because it is the week of the US Open, the 2nd major of the 2013 season (Adam Scott won the first - The Masters).
This year, the US Open will be played at Merion Golf Club (East Course), a private club outside Philly. The course is not overly long but will of course be set up to play tough US Open conditions. Tall grass rough, very fast greens that are hard to putt on, etc. The course is known for having these weird red wicker basket things on the pins, instead of flags. This will be the 5th US Open hosted at Merion, the last time being in 1981.
Here are some views of Merion East:
Richard, the tournament runs for four days. Starting this Thursday, and finishing on Sunday (barring a playoff I guess). Since you're a n00b I'll try to post very basic stuff for you. A bunch of players begin on Thursday and play a full round, then the same on Friday. After Friday, a bunch of players from the field will be cut for having a poor 2-round total, and their tournament is over. Those who make the cut will finish both Saturday and Sunday's rounds. Coverage is on ESPN and NBC. Pre-coverage can be found on Golf Channel that morning.
This year seems like a good time to watch because there is an ELIte group going out on Thursday. The group teeing off together are World Number One (TiGOAT Woods - USA #1!), #2 (Rory McIlroy - Northern Ireland), #3 (Adam Scott - Australia). The TV coverage will probably show almost all shots from this group.
TiGOAT Woods has won the US Open 3 times, and has 14 total major championships, 4 shy of Jack "former GOAT" Nicklaus. Tiger hasn't won a major since 2008, his longest stretch since turning pro. He does, however, have 4 wins already this year and is far and away the #1 player in the world.
Rory McIlroy, MBE, is a 24 year old golf wunderkind. Already a 2-time major champion. He ran away with both the 2011 US Open and the 2012 PGA Championship, each by 8 strokes. He is equipped with talent as pure as his hair is curly. That is to say, he's very talented. He dates tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. He is/was supposed to be the heir-apparent to Tiger Woods. Europe's "answer" to USA#1's Golden Child Woods. An immense talent but his 2013 has been very sub-standard. Toothaches and missed cuts. Nike golf is paying him millions and millions of dollars a year to use their clubs and since switching from Titleist, he kinda sucks. But he's still coasting on his elite 2012 (4 wins - 1 major) so he's still got the #2 spot in the world.
Not a large guy (5'9" 160), but he murders the driver, and typically is probably in the top 10 on tour in average drive distance, at somewhere just over 300 yards. Also a talented a bunker player. His weakness seems to be either not caring enough or being bored or something. But when he's on he's as ELIte as Tiger.
Adam Scott of Australia. 6 feet, tan, strong, white teeth and an Aussie accent. Curly hair but not the brillowy kind like Rors. He's a hottie, so says women. Women like this dude and want to **** him. Nobody really knows if he's straight or gay but it doesn't really matter. He's in his early 30s and he just won The Masters and is either slaying mad pussy or mad c0ckandballs. Guy is very good at golf, too. He choked pretty hard at last year's Open Championship (the British one), but came back strong at the 2013 Masters and won in pretty epic fashion, for his first ever major championship. First Aussie to win The Green Jacket. Something even Greg Norman never did.
Something "extra" that makes this grouping kinda fun is that the old man smiling in the Adam Scott photo is Steve Williams, his caddie. Steve Williams was Tiger Woods' caddy for years and then Tiger fired him a couple years back for whatever reason. A very public pissing match ensued where Steve Williams even made a RACE JOKE at Tiger's expense, down in New Zealand or wherever he's from.
So the Aussie golden boy, Scott, hired him and they've done well ever since. For all I know, Scott and Woods get along fine but Stevie walking around in Tiger's group is pretty funny. Their post-round handshake will certainly be ice cold.
Tiger and Rory seem to get along fine but I'm sure Tiger hates all the media buildup about how Rory is supposed to be the next him. Rory and Scott probably get along just fine.
The defending US Open champion is a guy who loves The Bible. A good ol' southern boy named Webber Simpson, and his wife is named Dowd. We know this because he always mentions her and Jesus by first name. He kinda came out of nowhere last year to win the Open at Olympic outside San Francisco. He's a very strong player but it's not like he's expected to defend. Also, last year some guy with a headdress on jumped in front of him and Costas and he said "Enjoy the jail cell, pal", before the guy was thrown into a bunker.
Sergio Garcia expects to play. He said Tiger eats fried chicken just a few weeks ago. I am not kidding. This is held in Philly. The Philly fans are expected to throw fried chicken in his general direction and make his week a living hell. Well, maybe not but I'm sure you'll hear plenty of jeers and the TV coverage will likely pick up on some of it. "Submergio", as he's been dubbed by his own mother, is a whiny bitch who sucks at golf.
And not to be forgotten, 2+2's very own poster "stadler" (Michael Weaver) is also playing in this week's US Open. He is an amateur but he finished 2nd in the US Amateur last year so he gained entry. Definitely BAD-ASS. This guy also played in The Masters this year and got to play a practice round with Rory McIlroy.
Anyway, I hope you choose to tune in come Thursday and we'll see if we can't turn you from a WNBA fan to a golf fan!
