You guys are missing the point on the cake thing. Common people can't afford a similar wedding cake because it's marked up by a very large factor that is driven by pricing yourself in the range of rich people.

This is fine. Cake-makers can use whatever pricing strategy maximizes their profits but it sucks when regular people have to serve Kroger cake at their wedding.

This is clearly all the fault of too many people going to college and not enough people going to cake trade school to fill the mid-tier wedding cake market

Also Triumph I agree with you. My whole "rich parents" thing is way overblown. But even for regular non-rich people, the actual buyer is gubmint loans so common folk rack up ridiculous debt because they aren't hit with a cash outlay when shopping.

None of this is "good".

The new hotness is pie and ice cream at weddings.

****ing awesome, dirt cheap. Marie Callendar's doesn't have a wedding fee, you just buy a pallet of awesome pies and dig in.

/Life advice.

Wedding cake market is hard to bust into. Ex-sorority girls have a stranglehold on the industry.

You're thinking of cupcakes. Based on my viewings of Food Network challenges, the cake market is dominated by tatted up possible junkies

See it's stuff like this that seems to be ingrained in us in the US and just seems wrong to me. There is nothing wrong with a trade. I'm going to be a shepherd, I'm going to get a flock of sheep and tend to them.

One of the funniest stories I've ever heard was from a friend of mine who visited Vietnam, went to a zoo, and they had a show with a bear riding a bicycle. Then the bear got pissed off and escaped, like just ran into the rest of the zoo where tons of people were, and the guys running the show just kind of shrugged it off.

it's pretty good if your dad bought out the entire thing and you were the only one going there

(i don't know about the origin of this joke nor am i trying to pile on it)

part of the other thing about a trade is that you actually have to be good at something - it's not as simple as STA makes it out to be

Again we must ask the question: if power seeking men aren't running for Senate, where did they go? Meanwhile all the lobbyists and Wall Street bankers are men, isn't that odd?

Triumph,
I didn't say learning a trade was easy or simple, I said it didn't require mathematical ability.

Uh, what?

The problem with society bastardizing teachers is clearly a major problem with the quality of people choosing to enter the profession. I'm not saying you need the smartest folks teaching K-6, but you need the best possible people for the jobs, and that's obviously not what you're getting now--particularly in areas of highest need. Of course for high school, the intelligence of professors--and I mean intelligence in the broadest sense-- is going to be crucial for student development.

If the job is made more attractive and not constantly berated by lolprivate sector professionals and know-nothing conservative front groups than obviously you will get more talented people entering the teacher pool.
