The problem with society bastardizing teachers is clearly a major problem with the quality of people choosing to enter the profession. I'm not saying you need the smartest folks teaching K-6, but you need the best possible people for the jobs, and that's obviously not what you're getting now--particularly in areas of highest need. Of course for high school, the intelligence of professors--and I mean intelligence in the broadest sense-- is going to be crucial for student development.
If the job is made more attractive and not constantly berated by lolprivate sector professionals and know-nothing conservative front groups than obviously you will get more talented people entering the teacher pool.
