the graph is asking why the latter 3 doubled, not recommending that we're spitting out 100k chemical engineers every 2 years

the problem is that it looks like a psychology major found a job where they let them use a computer to make graphs. This is even worse than them being unemployed if we want to progress as a society.

yeah but they won't look this way when I go to retire. already advancing the age/time taught...honestly tho, without any kids yet I prob wouldn't be retiring early anyway if that kid is about college age..

The computer science section of that graph is the most shocking part to me. Nothing has made a greater change to everyday life in the time period that covers than the availability of personal computers and related technology, and yet the number of graduates in the area has decreased. It's not even something that you need really strong math skills for in the same was as a lot of engineering does, just a solid grounding in logic and you'll do fine.

i'm aware of that. these degrees are ostensibly catch-alls - seems to me there's a problem of communicating what the private sector needs out of colleges, and i doubt it's significantly more of any of the things on the left.

kc: good article - i agree with a lot of it, find the rest one of those compelling arguments that people who are very strong writers and arguers make where you get 4 steps into the logic and you're like wait a minute, steps B C and D made sense, but I've got to go back to A - that seems like an awfully big assumption. there's certainly some deeper questions raised by that though.

Oh it's definitely not just with women. My post was purposely crass. I also said it was the "best thing about college", which was sarcasm.

Edit: She's in special ed. and the classroom teachers are basically using the union to try and do less and less in the classroom. Basically when the classroom teachers have special ed kids they are supposed to be responsible for teaching the kids, but they don't want to have to tailor the lesson plans to the individual students.
This makes me glad that teachers in my area are generally good and give a **** about the students.

Boomers are 1946-64. So they were aged like 0 to 18 when this period started.
Haven't caught up on the FACK (wow a lot of posts past 20 hours) but ARC is right, imo

I actually learned more calc from Khan than actual lectures. He's very good at explaining topics simply and straightforward.

I think gender roles/expectations play a part here, as they make it so that men are more likely to do jobs that don't always require degrees, like manual labor or joining the military.

While it usually doesn't come to that I know that my dad and uncle who both teach say that they always wait for other teachers to be present to break up fights just so there are witnesses that they didnt act aggressively towards students if that's what it comes too. I know they have both had coworkers lose jobs over similar accusations of excessive force or inappropriate touching in the case of female fights in the past. On top of that a lot of people who are the best teachers take a bunch of flak from administration for not going by the book and teaching to standardized tests. Aside from the very gradual pay scale deterring many qualified people from this profession I believe these risks and this feedback from administration really hamstrings the best teachers and gives the worst ones easy outs to keep their jobs without improving.
My mother is a teacher. She loves teaching and loves the kids. Her biggest complaints are always about the administration. Always. Some criteria that the state or whatever will institute that just doesn't make sense, but she has to make it work.

fwiw, most teacher's union dues are like $700 yearly, and the fee they charge you if you're NOT in the union and are included in the collective bargaining (which you HAVE to be) is $680.

so to save $20/yr you get to be ostricized.

I can't remember if it was an email or at a union meeting (the worrrrrst) but they straight up told who on the district didn't join the union. 47-year old women plotting on them and ****. LOL

I remember my first ever union meeting was the day before school started.

head union guy on stage: "...and the new superintendent asked if she could come speak to us for a couple minutes, so..."

and I'm sitting there like, 'cool, wonder how she is' and he finishes..

"I told her HELL NO! THIS IS OUR TIME if she wants to talk to us a a group, she needs to schedule it properly like everyone else!!"

literally 90% of the 600 or so teachers in the room immediately rose to their feet screaming and cheering.

I literally could not believe what I just saw. a group of middle aged teachers displaying the most childish **** I've ever seen in a group setting among adults.

so. yeah.

MLBPA union dues are $65 per day and they have a minimum salary of $490K

perhaps if the teachers raised dues to that much that could all be really rich as well

I thought that was fine until poker got shut down (duh) and my girlfriend broke up with me because she was still 21 and felt I was holding her back and didn't want the white picket fence and kids bull**** (still love her) and am now going back to school which im about 2 and a half years realistically from finishing.

I have about 60 credits all electives and its about time to decide a major. As Clark said, I've envious of the people who just know exactly what they want to do for the rest of their life and go do it. I am not that person. Its very hard to imagine how your life will be when you get a career. Im 27, don't have any debt as I've been paying for school out of my pocket, but basically have no assets. Anybody who went through a similar struggle? Feel free to chime in.
.
Yeah. I too am finishing school. Went to 3 schools in 3 different years at the height of the poker boom, when I was really just playing poker and not caring. I finished my first year back, and have about 3 semesters left. (Taking summer classes with the hope I can graduate this time next year)

Poker was kind to me and I've been coasting on what I did a while ago. Luckily for me it's allowed me to just focus on school. Very much have no idea what the next thing will be in a year, but I can't worry about that until I finish this 10 yr project of mine now.
