any value this has is still less than the value of just getting a competent teacher

chicago teachers suck. the school system gets lousy results so the mayor wanted to increase the length of day which was 5 hours 45 minutes and only 160-170ish days instead of the usual 180. obviously this cant stand because dont think of the children think of us. then they object to any sort of evaluation method because they claim that they cant help students who are poor and have a bad home environment, to which the response should be "so what do we need you for then?"

i threw trash out my car window at them when they were striking

The traditional school model just seems very outdated. Force a bunch of kids, who are probably at way different academic levels, to sit still for 8 hours while they get lectured to. I'm not sure where the "easy fixes" are, but pretty confident school won't look anything like this in 100 years. Any elements of self-learning, creativity, actually encouraging kids' natural curiosity would be a vast improvement.

School for the wealthy won't look like this, no. I don't think people ask the larger questions about what it means to be educated, or why we're educating people at all (I guess the stock answer is that they can be reasonably educated voters but lol at that really).

Basically it seems like there's an enormous amount of inertia keeping the system as is - it doesn't seem to fit a technology-based world at all.

At the same time, the public schoolteacher itt saying he ****ing hates unions clearly doesn't get it either.

Pretty sure he would hate his life (or at least how much money he makes) if his union never/didn't exist.

The idea that 10-18 yo kids all have v different ability levels wrt academics is not one that will be openly accepted in mainstream society anytime soon.

Agree 100%.

Yeah, I guess. I do think increased freedom and self-driven learning can help adjust to this reality (they do have different ability levels) without some of the "distasteful" implications of e.g. heavily tiered schools, on a wide level, from an early age. That sort of thing is admittedly relatively time- and labor-intensive from an administrative standpoint, though. I guess this is where the "schools for the wealthy" aspect comes in.

Das Boot,
yeah, video lectures + video solutions to practice problems will soon allow some bright students to breeze through year long courses in a couple months. I dont think schools will switch to allowing students to take video lectures and exams at their own pace for at least a decade tho.

I think they should offer more hypermegaelite schools for the super rich to make room for the poors to take their place at the current good schools

Ezekiel 25:17. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the
tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through
the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike
down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the tup when I lay my vengeance upon you!

Feel like video isn't even necessary for a lot of the math/science/comp courses from (say) grades 3-10. Went to a super small middle school where me and another kid basically just worked on our own in math and science. Weren't really supervised, didn't use our time all that efficiently, still cruised through just an absolute ton of material just through avoiding the time wasted by inefficient, passive listening rather than efficient reading supplemented by the occasional question. So much lecturing is just time completely wasted.

I think in many cases, for brighter students, teachers not only fail to optimally aid learning but actually/actively obstruct it.

I find watching video solutions to difficult problems, after I try them, to be v enlightening.

edit: and by lectures I mean introducing concepts and formulas, and working select example problems, which is necessary even at lower grades

I definitely believe this, but I don't have any clue what people could do about it.

I had an idea about changing the way kids do math homework using applications run on computers/tablets. Would make solo learning much easier.
