this talk is depressing to me personally. I went the poker route at 19 in 2004. Did that for a couple of years. Then got into owning/running a restaurant that pays me about 25-30k a year while adding another 15-20k a year playing poker part time. I thought that was fine until poker got shut down (duh) and my girlfriend broke up with me because she was still 21 and felt I was holding her back and didn't want the white picket fence and kids bull**** (still love her) and am now going back to school which im about 2 and a half years realistically from finishing.

I have about 60 credits all electives and its about time to decide a major. As Clark said, I've envious of the people who just know exactly what they want to do for the rest of their life and go do it. I am not that person. Its very hard to imagine how your life will be when you get a career. Im 27, don't have any debt as I've been paying for school out of my pocket, but basically have no assets. Anybody who went through a similar struggle? Feel free to chime in.

Also, funny anecdote about the whole trade school business. My dad is a true assbergers (sp?) case and works for the local natural gas company as a serviceman. He's told me college was not for him but if i want to go fine...since i was like 10 years old. However hes trying to get me to get a job with him where i could start out at like 40k a year with mandatory 1 week a month on-call and overtime. This jobs obviously not for me but he has always bragged about what a good job he has and that hes just a jack of all trades and more kids should do what he does. Ok guess its not funny but I guess its interesting how things come full circle.

In the spirit of the teacher discussion and the "what should I do with my life discussion" - a schu bombshell is that I actually dropped out of a good teaching masters program like 6 weeks in roughly a year ago because I knew it wasn't for me. I'm a smart guy and I love teaching people things and if I could just teach without all the BS I'd be really happy. But it became more and more apparent that I couldn't deal with the whole teacher culture, administration BS, parents, etc. It's awful. I respect those that do put up with it and teach. Still, it's a 9-month job, so extrapolate your salary accordingly. Teachers are not underpaid. A lot of teachers retire making like 70k+ for 9 months a year.

Also, the best female high school teacher I had once drunkenly slapped me on the ass and slurred some flirty comment that I don't remember. This teacher later went on to have an affair with the father of a girl who was in her chem class at the time. She was also caught having lesbian sex with another female teacher by some idiot peeping-tom students who noticed that one was at the other's house late at night. Teachers!

Your dad is right in a way that kids need to embrace trade skills. A really good option for those that might not succeed going the traditional college route.

Don't hate on the unions, not creating/joining one is just a dumb decision. Blame your governments for caving in and being awful at negotiations.

It would be awesome if private employee salary information was made public, like that of teachers.

It is for top officials of publicly traded companies.

But ranges and approximations for specific jobs aren't hard to find.

I mean individual employees. Not just industry stuff.

Would cause massive amounts of butthurt and probably a lot of people would stop talking about how overpaid teachers are once they realize (seemingly) everyone at their private sector job makes more than them. lol

Well, Clark thinks they're not even doing a real job, so any amount of money they get paid is an overpayment.

Teachers get in many cases pensions worth an insane amount of money in a NPV basis as of retirement date.

Rat as usual either trolling or with reading comprehension issues.

Clark, source?

I don't think my wife gets Social Security. I know she doesn't pay into it (honestly I'm glad because lol SS). Her full TRS will kick in when she's 58 and been teaching for 32 years.

Sounds a lot like you're saying that teaching is not a real job.

People that think teachers are overpaid... what do you think the wage for a teacher fresh out of college should be? 10 years in? With a masters?

People always think teachers are overpaid, go on about getting summers off etc, then someone argues with them and it's like a coin flip that at least one of their parents is a teacher. Just going to pass on this whole debate.

Have spent the past 4 months applying to every teaching job and college football job I could potentially get and can barely get interviews. I'm very pissed off with teaching. Being unemployed and no prospects has been super fun! /csb

You're wrong, but only about what you thought I was saying. I definitely wasn't saying "go to a university that costs you more than ~8k a year just because that's supposed to be the next step."

It is hard to find a bigger advocate for "the idea that college is for everyone is a scam" than me.

Posted in the gold forum also.

Anyone have recommendations for courses near Gulf Shores or Mobile, Alabama? I checked out the course on the trail near mobile but there are 3 different ones and $82 for a Tuesday seems a little steep.

Teachers should be payed well. They spend 6 hours a day with kids during a crucial stage in their development. They need to get rid of seniority and **** like that too, only hire known good teachers.
