Right. And the rest are all indignant about how hard the job is when one mentions it, which is total BS.

And it's not a hard enough job to justify society paying 2x-3x to get better people. Yet to me it seems like in many cases it's already an overpaid job in places with the super awesome pension plans. Meh, it's a mess.

I think sales is a grind once you've been in it for 10 years. My dad's been selling for like 40 years and I'm pretty sure he wishes he would have finished his Civil engineering degree or whatever.

My brother sells and is constantly complaining about his commissions and how his boss either rips him off or just says money is short and pays him like months later. Even though your commission comes directly from something you've already ****ing sold.

Yeah, IndignantTeacherWhoNeverHadARealJob is quite an obnoxious turnoff.

The truth is that teaching is a pretty high risk and low reward job (aside from personal satisfaction). There is way too much bull**** that teachers have to deal with and potential for vengeful kids or ignorant parents to make some offhand remark or start a fight that leads to full blown criminal charges for something that never happened. While it usually doesn't come to that I know that my dad and uncle who both teach say that they always wait for other teachers to be present to break up fights just so there are witnesses that they didnt act aggressively towards students if that's what it comes too. I know they have both had coworkers lose jobs over similar accusations of excessive force or inappropriate touching in the case of female fights in the past. On top of that a lot of people who are the best teachers take a bunch of flak from administration for not going by the book and teaching to standardized tests. Aside from the very gradual pay scale deterring many qualified people from this profession I believe these risks and this feedback from administration really hamstrings the best teachers and gives the worst ones easy outs to keep their jobs without improving.

Clark,

Have you read any of the other Dalai Lama's books? If so, would you recommend any of them?

I'm finishing up Beyond Religion and I couldn't be more impressed. By far the fairest assessment of ethics and the role religion plays/should play into it that I've ever read.

Unions clearly don't help the better teachers obv. Tho the unions have gotten them absurd retirement packages in many cases.

Meh. I think people who know a handful of teachers know that the ones in it for the right reasons rarely complain about it. They also tend to be better at the job than the ones looking for a paycheck. I think I somehow lucked into my fair share of the former growing up.

Well, if it were done the right way (or at least not the current way), it might be.

But I can't argue with your overall point. My wife and I get paid fine. Our problems of our own doing, not the fact that we're underpaid. I teach because seeing kids achieve something they didn't think they could, is ****ing awesome. Or seeing their sense of accomplishment after a big performance.

You can't do it for the money. Or the "time off." lol.

I realize nath is kinda popular but since everyone is weighing in and doing so positively I want to say that I find nath absolutely awful as a poster. And I'm pretty sure I have a chunk to do with why he's gone. Not going to get into the reasons why I find him universally loathesome but let's just say I'm glad he took his ball and is playing elsewhere. For my own health and probably his.

It seems like the relationship between pay and job difficulty is inverted. Being in a poor neighborhood means you're being paid less to do a MUCH harder job. I have no idea how to resolve that.

Thanks. It's dense material but I thought it was the best book I've ever read.

I have not read any others by him but own a few that I haven't gotten to yet.

Depends on what you're selling, how long you've been selling and how opportunistic you are IMO.

Best move is to get in a position where you're hiring you're own sales team and making them grind. Managing is much better than grinding. (obviously easier said than done, but this is the ideal spot to be in for a sales person).

engineering is pretty sweet but just recently I realized I need to step my game up in terms of technical development if I want to still be a good one 5-10 years from now. I work with enough older guys who have coasted and it def makes sense to me why companies don't want to hire anyone over 40. 90% of my non-management coworkers over the age of even 35 would not be able to find work if they got ****canned today.

Pay those people more and cushy suburban gigs with self motivated kids less. If teaching paid a lot more I would have done that for sure, but im selfish and would rather make more money doing something i like than doing something i think would be a little more fulfilling but provide a different lifestyle. I still kind of have a long term goal of teaching but I want to set myself up financially first and am not sure ill ever get out if I get to the point where I have the money to be as free and flexible as I desire.

The bolded is the entire issue though. Nice neighborhoods won't give away the money and poor neighborhoods don't have it. Who bridges that gap and how?
