"figure out what you want to do with your life by the time you're 21-23" is a quality bit of advice

quality advice in the same sense that "inherit a million dollars by the time you turn 20" is quality advice

i have no idea either, although it is largely my fault. but it's not like i can go back in time and turn 17-year-old me into a mature, responsible adult-type individual.

I do like Riverman's four.

Solid list Riverman.

CDL needs to trim his down a bit. Maybe if you had done it at age 14 it would have been a little better edited.

My list as I am a few months away from turning the quarterpole on my life:

1. Get out there and experience new places and things, but don't be too quick to leave everything behind.

2. **** it, it's only money

3. Having a career doesn't mean you have to give up on your other dreams

4. Get your ass in shape. Seriously. Makes everything else so much better.

You should have some sort of general idea but I think it's much more important to keep an open mind and always be flexible in this regard because things can change so quickly. And when they do, you have to be willing to make those changes.

Could be worse, I have a job and a degree, options are open, could probably get into med school if I wanted (I don't want to) but I do feel like I'm treading water. Which is fine, better than swimming in the wrong direction, for now.

Pretty sure a huge fish move is ever "figuring out what you want to do with life"

Yes. Really it's about opportunity. A year ago, I wasn't even considering the profession I have now, but the opportunity came and here I am.

I'm Irish-American so I'm pretty biased about St. Paddy's Day. I enjoy going to the parade and it's refreshing when you're a ginger and suddenly every 5th guy you see looks like they could be your brother.

Oh make no mistake I definitely hate it. "Tomorrow is a new beginning!" says the fat 38 year old woman with cats. No, it's Wednesday. I mean if I was mega rich or new a bunch of mega rich people I'd probably enjoy it because the party would be classy and sick.

When I was young I thought this way but now that I'm old I disagree with it. I "knew" I wanted to be an architect since I was like 7. Got my degree at 23, license by 29 and that same year I basically quit the profession because I hate it so much.

Take your time man. Don't rush into anything just because you think you're "falling behind" or whatever. Y'all don't realize how young 23 really is. I know when I was 23 I thought I was getting so old and needed to have life figured out. lol @ that. Get drunk and get laid.

lol, no she won't. No oil company in their right mind would ever send her out to a rig anyway.

There are a lot of things you need to know you want to do by 23 because it takes another 5-15 years to get there and there is basically no realistic way to start later. Knowing that you never want to do any of the things that requires that definitely means you know what you want to do. Imagine the success rate of people who decide they want to be a doctor at age 35. I doubt many of them make it.

Number 4 is quite bad. I'd give anything to make my career less of a priority in my younger years and just relax and appreciate my more important relationships.

Having life figured out the moment you step outside a classroom is just dumb. Known plenty of people that realized their chosen path sucked dick and have changed careers in their 30's-40's and been way happier.

I'm very excited to be changing gears and I won't be in the new field until nearly 34. Sticking with a job you don't like is a recipe to hate life in my experience.
