couple of noobish football questions:

1) how do you objectively measure o-line performance? is there a set of stats used?

2) what happens to interim coaches if the team opts to hire a new coach?

2) Is let go unless its a rare situation.

so there's no:

step 1) promotion of offensive coordinator, for example, into interim
step 2) new coach is hired
step 3) interim returns to o-coordinator role

or anything like that?

As an example:

When this happened to me in college a lot of the players signed a petition to keep our interim coach on as the head coach. He eventually would not be selected for the position. He was by far the best coach on the staff and keeping him due strictly to his ability was a no-brainer.

But, the fact that just about every coach is going to have supporters its not in the best interest to split a locker room. At the professional level this really shouldn't be an issue but I would assume its a very real one. Now, if he is a interim coach for a couple of weeks in the offseason or something, the story could be different.

It is usually best for both parties to just move on. But, like I said, there maybe some instances where it could work. There is also the whole new coach coming in is going to want to bring in his own guys that he knows he could work with or he believes are more qualified.
