No way is NoVa the South. Grew up in Georgia, so sorry CDL, your ad hominem attack doesn't work on me.

Because I'd say GP just defines the area whereas Midwest defines the culture. I'd say people in Kansas are similar to people in other Midwest states. Go to Colorado, and I'm sure the culture is much different.

Hey modern Northern Virginians; have there been any recent over-the-top memorials to, say, a certain confederate general installed just south of D.C.?

Have any similar memorials been dedicated in other non-south areas of the country?

Also, have you noticed distinctly fewer native southerners on the Maryland side of the city? Ever wonder why that is, lol?

Look, guys, don't take this the wrong way but you are in the south. Go hang out in Atlanta for a while; you may be surprised to find it's not that dramatically different. Not every town in the south actively beats a Jack Nicholson to death everytime he and a couple of hippies cruise on through is all.

Ohio is not midwest. I've got a pretty strict cutoff at Indiana.

Oklahoma is definitely midwest

Tornado Alley - OK and points north
Pacific Northwest - OR and WA
Rockies
Southwest - Zona + NM, NV?
NoCal
SoCal
Texas
SEC
Southern Florida
Midwest
OH, WPA, eastern michigan and WNY
Mid Atlantic - Maryland, DC, Delaware, NVA, Jersey?
NYC
New England
Alaska
Hawaii

Seems like the dominant cultures.

Neither is the midwest. Turn a map upside down and notice just how "east" the Midwest actually is. The "center of gravity" so-to-speak, of the USA is likely near the Kansas/Colorado border.

Texas is large enough that it's just Texas. It also does a great job of separating the Southwest (New Mexico) from the Southeast (Louisiana).

People who say "Nova" are funny. Y'all have such a superiority complex wrt the rest of Virginia. I haven't been to the state since 1983 and I realize "NOVA" is basically booming and an extension of D.C. but it's always cute when people are so quick to point out they don't actually live in Virginia. It's NOVA, yo.

Missouri isn't very flat. Many areas of large forests and hills. It is definitely not planar. Illinois might be flatter.
Missouri is not flat. It is significantly wavier than Illinois, which is almost entirely flat. Northern Missouri, once you get away from the Ozark Mountains, and closer to Iowa, is probably pretty flat, though. Mouse-over Google Earth to get a decent idea of the elevation and change in elevation that occurs in Missouri.

Again with the "Nova" crap. Down here in Houston I had a guy on my baseball team who told me he moved here from "NOVA" like I knew wtf that meant. We're like a thousand miles from there. He was also short, balding in his mid-'20s, and a complete *******. He was originally from NYC.

Sorry that people make a distinction between two regions close to them that are night and day from each other.

My gym is always full of old people and there are like maybe 5 people under 35 including myself.

Though now that colleges are out it was highly improved yesterday when I was there (like 5 new hot chicks)

Alabama. Arlington or Alexandria or something.

While he is ******ed, he does not think DC is southern. He thinks northern Virginia is southern. He has plenty of southern friends around to hang out with, go hunting with, etc.

I used to think I wasn't in the south, either, until one day there was this sudden brew-haha over ours being the last town in the state of Alabama to fly the confederate flag over its city hall. Suddenly all sorts of people started talking very angrily and cryptically and there was like venom everywhere. It was weird.

Think of your southerners as terrorist sleeper cells. I mean, there are relatively cosmopolitan areas in Afghanistan, too.

Is there a giant memorial to Robert E. Lee?

it's where his boyhood home was, so ofc there's a museum/memorial. arlington/alexandria is a progressive, liberal, well-to-do area that operates as a suburb of DC. this has developed rapidly in the past couple decades or so.

ive lived a year in richmond. ive lived a year in arlington/alexandria. they are very different places. both have their pros and cons. i prefer nova because of its proximity to DC, but i rather enjoyed my time in southern VA too.

Actually disagree that Atlanta is that different, but that is because it has become like Northern cities in alot of ways so don't really think it makes your point. Really the main difference is you obv have more people from the rest of the South visiting and more young people from the rest of the South moving there who take time to assimilate or move back out. But people who live and stay there are pretty liberal.

US census brah. But I can see arguments for that not being southern or certain areas of Texas/Florida not being southern. To me, that's not as clear cut as the Midwest states, which I think are pretty obvious.
