Wonder if they would have to mandate driverless cars or if you could have the choice. Seems like if every car was a robot it would be more plausible for safety.

If Driverless cars are the norm, then people have no need to own their own car. You could craft an app like Uber to run your own driverless taxi service. You can suggest rideshares like a dating app, matching people to cut costs. You could set up a constant carpool to pick you up for work every day. Need a bigger car to lug hockey equipment or golf clubs? You can get that too.

Your driverless taxi picks you up, charges your account, and drops you off. Voila! We no longer need parking spaces. People don't need to own their own car. They no longer need to pay for insurance, or repairs, or upkeep. Those are all factored into the price of rides, and liability is shared among all cars.
People can already do that sort of thing, there just happens to be one person driving the car. I think switching to mass carpooling is a more significant culture shift, rather than something that comes with technological advances.

No parking would be a pretty awesome step to take though.

Oh man the taxi cartels in some cities are nuts.

These are the sorts of complaints and theoretical problems people had with driverless cars *before* the Google guys came on the scene and demonstrated that those fears actually clash with the reality of the available technology.

They've already driven 300,000 miles without an accident including many in San Francisco. It's not a matter of happening soon, it's already happened and the robot is clearly superior to humans (surprise!). It's also similar to cruise control in that the driver can take over at will (I actually dislike that part).

Robot umps, robot cars, robots took our jerbs. Algorithmic trading software took my job. Massive gains in efficiency is the way of the 21st century.

dr. ikes posting reminded me of this:

http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/robo...-room-18944557

they never once bring up death rates of human performed surgery vs robot assisted surgery. it's just "omg robots are killing people!" this is why we're it's gonna be a while before we have driverless cars.

but robot surgery is still growing, some throwaway news story aside, right?

Yeah maybe you're right. I'm sorry, I just hadn't really heard about all of this and didn't think it was this far along. My mind is currently being blown. This thread is basically where I get most of my non sports info. It's sad really.

robot assisted surgery is. how long do you think it will take until robots are doing the surgery by themselves? i think it'll be a long ****ing time.

sure, but I think (don't know directly, of course) that has much more to do with technology than these rando "fill the time" news reports.

Robot surgery and stuff like arthroscopy, laparoscopy and various video game surgery are on the increase.

Slightly different situation though, because doctors are still required to 'run' the robot. That won't change.

would guess that human driving on public roads is made illegal within our lifetime. it makes sense that both safety and speed would (one day) improve if all cars were robot controlled.

Curious if the LOL USA will ever work in pissing off any Americans (try as they might to infer otherwise, I moved it to troll Euros, not because I was actually upset). Seems like the equivalent of trying to rile a white guy by calling him a cracker. It's like yeah ok you got me br0.

As Americans we know we are dumb, gas guzzling, cheeseburger eating, gluttonous self-important cretins with a broken education system and crippling debt. We already laugh at ourselves, it's not really news if someone else points it out.

Anyone up on their current paintball? Going with a private party sometime during the week but don't want to use a rental so was looking at the best marker under 200.

Everywhere I look online is just little kids arguing.

Oh I see. Yeah, well if you haven't heard of it it's news to you. There are tons of youtubes on it (although evidently someone recently played a joke by pretending to be a Google driverless car in Manhattan and crashing into a bunch of things).

They've actually got a course on Udacity about how it works and the technical issues plus their solutions.

True, but I would then have to wait for the driver less car and paintball combo, and unfortunately the game is next week.

I assume driverless cars could pretty much all communicate with each other, in which case I cannot ****ing wait for them. Who knows, maybe you can Facetime the hottie in the car stuck in traffic with you?
