Yeah, when my fiancee and I were shopping around for a new TV last Xmas, the difference between our TV and equivalent smart TVs was $500-$600; when we saw the Vizio Co-Star was $100, buying a smart TV seemed dumb.

As for Roku, again, does it have a browser? That'd be a pretty important feature I'd want from any internet TV device.

I've read the GoogleTVForums a lot and am considering the Logitech Revue for the faster processor. It's only a little over $200 at HH Gregg, IIRC.

Of course, I'd love to just get a PS3, but I don't think I'm allowed to have one.

Thread has moved on but I still have had "I can assure you that I think we could still have a great time tonight even with sex off the table (really, Scout's Honor--I'm going to go beat off right now, I won't even WANT sex the rest of the day)...then what do you say? We still on for 7:00?" pop into my head a couple times a day and started cracking up.

Smart TVs are very convenient to have. I only use them for Netflix and YouTube, but those options are very handy when people are over and we can just throw a youtube clip up on the screen (wrt the conversation at hand). There's definitely a lot more options if you want.

Bigger question is LCD vs LED vs Plasma.

LED ainec

Three to four times the half-life, best refreshes, and the only format since the tube where something in SD is remotely watchable. Prices are going down when you can find deals on 40"+, 120Hz+ units.

What is "Hz"? Why is 120 better than 60, beyond just being a higher number?

How often the screen refreshes per second. Grabbed a 240Hz last Xmas; now anything in 60Hz looks choppy.

The action flow is incredible. 120 is great, too. I read the brain refreshes around 60Hz, so really anything greater than that cuts down on the perception of ghosting.

Here's a good article I read when I was researching: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7...-refresh-rate/

CDL,

I am in the same situation as you in looking for a TV and the one I am replacing. We have a TV in the bedroom right now that is a Vizio ~34" and it is dying. Starting making a loud high pitched buzzing noise and now the screen dies after 20-30 mins. This makes me very very skeptical of getting another Vizio.

My living room TV is a Toshiba 37" from 2009 and is gonna replace the Vizio.

CDL,

http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-E500d-A0...-4&keywords=tv

That is the one I am ranking >>>> the other three personally. Maybe even one size larger, but that seems to be pretty much good.

Dumb question: Isn't most stuff filmed in 30 frames/second? How does anything over 30 Hertz resolve this?

TigerDirect and HH Gregg usually offer great deals on Toshibas.

It depends.

The last time I was in the market, the deciding factor was the amount of sunlight in the room and whether you want to emphasize direct-line-of-sight viewing or multiple-angle viewing (i.e. watching sports alone in a cockpit vs. having friends over for movies). LED does best direct-sight without much sunlight ( which is how all tv demo rooms in Best Buy are setup) but may not be the best for your setup. At the time, price differential was extreme, not sure if they're still 2x-3x as much.

I don't remember all the scenarios, but what kind of setup are you looking for?

Microcenter usually has some pretty solid deals too. I almost exclusively purchase electronics from microcenter due to their prices/customer service. Only issue is that a lot of their better priced stuff is in-store pickup only. But they do have 23 locations around major cities in the country.

As with most purchases, the correct answer for TVs is almost certainly Costco. Their selection may not be what you'd see elsewhere but it's not exactly lacking and their price points are as good as any I've seen online. Bought two from there in recent years. With TVs I prefer cash-and-carry rather than ship, although the biggest one I bought was 55". Much bigger than that and I'd probably have to borrow a truck or something.

Agree about smart TV apps being overrated, particularly if the price is a lot higher. Not to mention only one manufacturer (Samsung I think) offers HBO Go, not sure if it was a deliberately exclusive contract or not but that's a must-have for me. XBox's app interface for Netflix and HBO Go is the best I've seen anyway.

My couch is about 10 feet away from my TV stand which is 52" wide and about 3'6" tall. No one would ever be watching at more than a 55 degree angle (straight on being 0 degrees). I do have a wall of windows to one side that will be open during the day, but the lighting isn't super bright and is mostly behind/above the couch rather than towards the TV. Prices don't seem to diverge a ton.

Panasonic Plasmas > Any LED on the market. I just bought the ST60 and it's so much better than any LED > 2k.

Well, doesn't sound like angle or brightness are much of a factor then, probably leans toward LEDs, since it's probably also more flexible for a move and the prices are closer. You actually might get a ton out of mounting and tilting it for perfect eyeline on the couch though--that made a huge diffrence ime.

Don't get screwed on mounts though; A good last-year mount model on Amazon can go from $50 down to $8 and work *fine* vs $100-$300 in a store.

Also vaguely recall hearing almost all monitors are actually made by Samsung now, and their customer service has improved to "good" from "go **** yourself" since I dealt with them for what I thought was the last time.

So it is Samsung.

One thing an a/v expert friend of mine told me awhile back which stuck is that Vizio is basically as good as a lot of the bigger name brands at a fraction of the price. That was 2-3 years old though so as their market share has presumably gotten even bigger they may have jacked their prices or not be as great of a value as they were then but I have no problem with mine.

No doubt avforums has about 3000 threads on this exact topic, or probably a sticky.
