Wouldn't call it an addiction, just real easy to come here when I'm being lazy or have nothing to do. Also, Deadspin comments are WOAT.

I cut the cord after Christmas and grabbed a Vizio Co-Star (Google TV) and an HD tuner. I don't regret it a bit.

My TV viewing habits are weird. I watch CNBC 10-11 hours a day at work and about 15 hours a week of live sporting events (though this varies a lot by season from 5ish hours to 25ish hours), but watch less than 1 hour a week of other content (movies, shows, netflix, tv show binges, youtube, etc.).

Who in SE is most likely addicted to the forums? I imagine some other boards, like BB4L and some others have more posters with serious addictions, but SE has to have some too.

I guess I would define addiction by it getting in the way of their careers, relationships, sleep, etc. Removing the forum would cause severe physical or emotional turmoil in some way.

Does SE have any serious forum addicts?
Funny, saw the thread title change and then found this post. Interesting timing.

Just yesterday when I was letting myself get frustrated at the confusion in the gay athlete thread it occurred to me that 2+2 for me is a lot like drugs: at the time it feels great but afterward it often leaves me feeling crappy. Particularly the arguing, of which I do more than my fair share and often post things that I later regret or wish I had handled in a more mature manner.

When MEbenhoe basically vanished I thought it was odd and couldn't imagine doing something that "extreme". But I also realize that often tapering is usually not a solution, particularly when addiction is involved. While I don't post or read at nearly the volume I used to, it's still way too much and I wonder what for.

Never had a "2+2 detox" in my time regged but it would probably be a good idea, and hopefully I'd come away with some perspective about whether it's remotely good or healthy for me in any relevant way.

edit: shows watched after they debut on air count as television. so i'll redact that.
Nothing wrong with watching shows you like. It's when I just wind up watching whatever's on like in between good shows or habitually just leave it on whenever I'm around that's the problem. It's ultimately just a glowing warm timesink for me and distracts me from **** I want to do--I realized it was an actual problem when it started interfering with poker.

I felt a void from missing Justified this season and its OOTV thread, which I've always found top notch. TV in general, especially late night talk shows, not so much.

I would compare my 2+2 usage to my alcohol consumption :

I drink more than most people, I enjoy drinking a lot, I get a craving for a beer once in awhile, but it doesn't get in the way of anything else and I don't need it.

So in that way I'm not addicted. But perhaps abusive, haha.

I was just thinking of making that comparison.

2p2 is something I enjoy doing, and I do it during the day because I get bored at work when there's nothing going on, but like booze, if I go a couple days without 2p2 (like a couple weeks without booze) I'm not exactly itching or feel like I have to go back to it.

It's just incredibly unbelievable that you can't pay for whatever channels you want at this point. I have to pay like $60/month just to have the option or purchasing HBO and Showtime. All I want are the networks, sports channels, Discovery, Animal Planet, AMC, TNT, FX, Comedy Central, and HBO/Showtime. Mayyyyyyyyybe HGTV just to shut my girlfriend up occasionally.

HGTV is the best non-premium channel of those that never shows sports.

ALIENS and OBAMA-DEVIL tho

Actually I never watch THC, just figured it would make for good viewing accompanied with a healthy supply of THC.

FoxNews is obviously great both intentionally (covering major breaking news) and unintentionally (everything else)

Someone did a study on this - sports make up an inordinate percentage of what people pay for cable. But I believe HBO is at least investigating making an end-run around cable companies.

Doesn't Time Warner own HBO? Seems like they would be really unwilling to break away from cable

It really is incredible how it is impossible in this day and age to not be able to order the shows you want and be forced with dozens of channels of bull**** because it is required at the point of entry.

I am no expert, but I think the FCC regulations make it virtually impossible for something like a start-up company to come and majorly disrupt the television market, but as amazon, hulu, netflix, etc. keep changing the way we watch TV by doing it all via the internet, eventually its going to open a spot for an integration with the cable companies.

Also LOL satellite TV.

Apple tv update:

Enjoying the MLB package on it. Has NBA & NHL as well, but I don't watch those. I'll be happy if I can get some college football packages. It's also basically a projectir/speaker for anything on a tablet or computer (and I guess a cloud) on the network. Probably nothing a pro couldn't hook up on their own (or a dozen similar devices), but simple, easy, and fast. Khan Academy videos, for instance--just press the 'airplay' button beside 'pause' on the video menu and it's on the TV while I hit the bike or do the wife's morning stretch/massage. Total of 5 minutes spent learning how to operate it.

Not bad.

I might actually not be updated with Apple and Google TV.

Is it actually possible to pick a-la-carte which channels you want on either of those platforms?

No

Only option sports wise is to buy season passes. You can watch that on most devices.

Otherwise no channels on TV.
